Newport, 5-10-11
Well this mornings trip was definitely a different day. Much less wind, though it was still windy, and no clouds (over me anyways). It was still cold, but warmed up by 8 or so. Water was a bit warmer at 64.5º and seemed a bit dirtier, maybe 5' visibility. Still very little current too. I didn't make it out until 5:45am (like yesterday), but even with the extra hour of tide movement it was barely moving. The first 2 hrs of the tide must have been really strong. Started off in the same area as yesterday, but the bite was very different. The fish weren't in the channels between the boats, but on top of the mooring anchors.
But, I did much better than yesterday, 7 legals and a few shorts, plus one beast that took me to the woodshed on my favorite buoy. My 6lb was no match for that fish. Like yesterday, the bite lasted until about 8am, then it died and I got very few nibbles after that. The mix was about 50/50 spot to sand, with the biggest being a sand bass about 2.5lb. Colors were pretty standard; fire avocado, gums, and sea food Flurrys and my secret weapon also got a few too. All baits had some Hotsauce too. I tried the Hyspin, but no love for the blade today. Tired and figuring the bite would stay slow I headed in at 9:30. So I guess for 3.5hrs of fishing, 10 fish ain't too shabby. I can't wait for the spotties to get into a late spring bite, last year was off the hook by this time. No pics today as I left my camera in the car.
