Check out Craigslist or the for sale section on here and you can often find Kayaks that are ready to go. I recommend getting something that is a stable yak, Cobras are great starting out yaks and sell fast if you want to upgrade. If he has his own yak he'll be more comfortable and it will be a better trip for the both of you.
