The kelp looked fantastic this morning, with bait everywhere and obvious signs of predators. Unfortunately, the predators were mostly mammals, sharks, barracudas, calicos, and jumbo macs.
A lone seal (not a sea lion) was mercilessly devouring every bait I put out, no matter how long I waited or how far I moved. As the wind picked up, I gave up and started the trek back to the launch. That's when I met Gabe and we chatted about launching in OB. Nice to meet you, hopefully we can get out there sometime.
The kelp was looking less and less fishy. A bit farther east and I finally put out a bait again, my last one. Sure enough, a few minutes later and that damn seal has my bait again. I let it run just in case, and what do you know... it's actually a fish! Not a big one, but I'll take it.
Have a happy 4th and be safe this weekend.
