Ideally, you would want like a 7ft rod for yoyos and something about 8ft or bigger for surface irons.

But if you want an "all around" rod, go with a 7ft. It's the optimal length for yoyo and live bait if you choose to fish that route as well. You can also cast irons with it. Obviously, you'd be better off casting irons with a longer rod, but you'll be able to cast them just fine with a 7 footer. If you're only getting one rod, I'd do this add a longer rod to the arsenal later on when you can afford it.

Grafighters are great. But they are expensive. If you're on a budget, try the Californian you can get at Turners. They run around $100 and are good rods.

As for reels, I just started using Avets and will never use anything else. Try an Mx series. No need to get two speed or raptor models, just the basic one is amazing. Go to a tackle shop and check out the MXL and the Mxj and see what width you like better For your applications. If those are too much, check out Diawa Sealines.
