Do it old school engineer style... draw it on paper, take your measurements, create a prototype with cardboard and a hot glue gun. If you're impatient, just buy the piping and connectors and friction-fit everything before cementing.
Also, get a heat gun and some beer bottles to form-fit the ends of the rod-holders.
