can we eat sea urchins

Not exactly kayak related unless you roll over with your nose to the sand. But are all the sea urchins are edible???are some better then the others??? Im talking about what we got over on the west coast. I love to eat sea urchin and seen plenty of them while kayaking so been wondering.

I'm thinking you can't even keep them. I know there's a sh*t load of restrictions that the DFG has, perhaps you can call or email them to confirm that you can actually pull and keep them. Do they taste like chicken?

Page 51 of Ca DFG reg book under invertabretes states they can be taken but you need to read tha restrictions ,Good luck and Good eating

That's nasty. :puke:But I love those fish in the background scootin' out from the rock to inhale the urchin goo. Just further proof that Tommy's Butta' is the shiznit.

Ugh,
Uni in Japanese, is the roe of the urchin, the egg sack.
It's super buttery, creamy even if you get if fresh out of the urchin.
Makes me puke on command.
But if you can tolerate it, I guess there's nothin better.
My wife goes nutty for the stuff (being Japanese and all).
Good luck with that.

Thats real good stuff...

We should eat sea urchins in front of the Seal Lady in Chrildrens Cove, She would like that..:biggrinjester:

Riskey Water 04-14-2011 06:52 AM

The big blacks and reds are great but I wouldn't waste my time on the small purple ones . Bon appetite !!!

sasha 04-14-2011 07:28 AM

I love the taste of Uni. Were thinking about jumping in and getting a few... and that says alot as im not a good swimmer lol.. But it would be a good reason to practice getting back in :biggrinjester:...
Now if i could only get a yellowtail and have sushi on the kayak fresh from the sea... Heck i would bring everything premade from home and just add the fatty part of the belly on top when i catch it.. I think im hungry now.

Hey Sasha ,you can get the good stuff on a minus tide ,just take a little soy and ginger with rice out and call it heaven

Urchins...

Fresh are delectable...:drool5:

Proper way is to take the back end of the spoon, separate, and use the spoon to scrape out...then put it on toasted crackers or bread...did I mention delectable?

Ditto Risky Water's message. I've eaten red, black, and purple. Purple not worth it but others are good (in an interesting way). White urchins are a different genus and even smaller -I have not tried them. Make sure you get a female with grainy, orange to purple color gonads. The males have smoother, light colored sacs (testes) with white milt that you may not want to ingest!
