Fishing Report 1/17/2011
Spent a few hours in Marina Del Rey, in 50to 60ft a water caught one undersized halibut that's it.
Compared to Newport Beach marina del rey has barely any life left i would paddle for about 20 mins and I barely saw something moving . I would barely see school of bait in my fish finder with an occasional 27-42inch fish after them. No one took my anchovy baits. :( Marina del rey is all polluted brown yucky slim behind the breakwater, i think from now on I am going to fish Malibu or Newport. I had two lines in the water, and they ended up getting tangled somehow,I was very frustrated because i saw this huge halibut swim by the fish finder and i didn't have any more lines to drop. |
everything is still healing from the recent storms, alot of debris in Dana, i'm sure it's all over, especially around harbors and river mouths...it'll clear:reel:
I had some good times fishing the mdr breakwater before.TONS of short hali's and lots of pencil barracuda before work,we were working at the Ritz Carlton and couldnt start till 9.That is one hell of a place to try to get home from at 5pm...
Usually people dont meter halibut because they lie flat on the bottom in ambush mode... |
What fishfinder are you using?
humminbird 161
You can tell that the fish was 27-42 inches? I think I need a better FF!:)
Are you using a video fishfinder or the new classified 'phased array' technology for increased target separation and algorythms that can calculate target size???? Or did you just look over the side?
Fishfinder
I gotta get me one O those there contraceptions that tell me size, weight and Species. A little about the fisheez family medical history would be sweet too>
Just stay in the mucky nasty harbor next time. Lots of fish there. :cheers1:
I do believe this blog has gone arye...what fish is Matt talking about????
Gino there still are no fish in Dana...:biggrinjester: "contraceptions" I am lost...lol |

The one i just bought, tells me the approximate size of a big fish. The biggest one i saw on the screen was 42 inches it was chasing a school of bait fish. The unit also features selective fish ID which although can't be completely accurate, it can give the user the ability to at least check the size of the fish before wasting time in regions which don't provide legal size fish or targeted fish and the ability to separate fish from structure identify. |
r u sure its not an underwater camera? I've used a few sonars and have never seen what you have seen..interesting for sure
no camera, just a transducer
I am going to take a wild guess and say you have the fish ID on that is showing fish symbols and the depth they are at next to them. scroll through the menu and change it to raw sonar signal.
I will try that when i go out next time.

Well, what iceman says its probably correct, i just bought the thing and it says "The Selective Fish ID feature provides a precise picture of sonar returns and when the very selective requirements are met, the unit displays three different fish icons representing intensity of the sonar return, and an indicator of relative fish size.":reel: Well i guess a BIG fish icon means a really big fish and how deep he is. that makes sense :leaving::leaving: |
