I am still chasing that BIG halibut from my dreams.

Matt

StinkyMatt 01-12-2011 08:29 PM

There are many places around long beach, look up Cherry street.

mtnbykr2 01-13-2011 02:16 PM

Well if not 6 am somewhere there abouts...channel 21A on the radio...roger? see ya there

maui jim 01-13-2011 02:38 PM

I've lost the halibut of my dreams in LBC. , If I go, I'll moniter the radio.

Hey hows the bait been lately there, or should I take the dip net to the dock. and make smelt sandwichs...

mtnbykr2 01-13-2011 03:41 PM

well I don't know how the bait is, if there is nothing to make they usually have it, I have been bit and caught more butts on plastic than bait, there has been days when it was on in the harbor only, and days when it has been on outside only....I haven't been out in over a month so I am excited either way...as long as we are fishin...
I have not fished LBC yet, and have wanted to try it out, that's closer for me anyhow, but I do love Dana...the wife loves Dana too so I gotta keep that in mind...:reeling:

StinkyMatt 01-13-2011 08:16 PM

Last time in DP a little after Xmas. The bait sucked big time, half dead small anchovies. The kid at the barge said there were some sardines mixed in, I did't see one. Even with the half dead bait pulled a couple short butts on a real snotty day in the harbor mouth.

See you guys out there on Sunday. Will try to be there by 6:30. Blue revo. Matt

maui jim 01-14-2011 05:42 AM

Weather is looking too good to pass on this. I will make some smelt with the dip net and see look for you on the water, I usually start out south of Belmont pier and work to the north, hopefully the "Current Gods" are with me. and make a nice drift,

StinkyMatt 01-14-2011 06:19 AM

Hey Maui Jim,

Are you talking about LB? I think that MtnByker, Ericko and I are gonna be at DP. Comon down to DP. Unless MtnByker is willing to go to Long Beach. I kind of committed to DP, but can change if needed.

I used to go catch bait at that pier with a Sabiki and chum with bread. Do you ever catch smelt from your kayak? All I've ever caught on a Sabiki are sardines and macs. Would be nice to get a few smelt for the flatties.

Matt

mtnbykr2 01-14-2011 06:46 AM

Yeah,
I'm headed to Dana...
I have seen crummy bait there before but you just never know...as far as
the smelt, I have never caught one fishie on a smelt, however they are easy to make...doesn't matter...were fishin' that's better than workin'...
see ya out there....b

I will probably go to LBC (it's close) and I usually make bait from the dock off Appian Way with dip net, by the lifegard station. with some White bread. the only time I can catch smelt is up in Santa Barbara or in the kelp. have not much luck on the kayak for smelt in LBC but still try while drifting have caught some decent size lizard fish for halis though

Gotta find the right size Smelt which can be the tricky part. I caught 5 or 6 fish in early Dec. on Smelt near the Queen Mary. There is a boat launch ramp about 1/4 mile upstream that you can launch at, but it costs $12 for the day. They do have a free wash station though.
