Mola Mola Report

No, I didn't catch one except on film.

For those of you that haven’t been out lately to enjoy the mola molas, here is a short underwater video of a school that was following me around last week…in HD

Nice Video Jay, those things are really awesome. One came in about 2 feet and sunbathed next to my yak, fin out..wasnt spooked or shy at all. Kinda the texture of plastic.. Are those pelagic parasites on the dorsal? (:16) I thought at first when I saw them in the water that they were fishing line or something

Very cool...at the 52 second mark, that guy looks like he was imitating a jet fighter...

Mola mola...not to be confused with mahi-mahi...

Always wondered how they swam and looked underwater. Offshore, if you pull up to a paddy and they have taken up residence, even one, just move along looking for the next paddy. For some reason they clear fish away...must be their intimidating looks...

Cool video. They have been coming up to the yak, seem to inquisitive creatures. They actually have been jumping out of the water out there...

I have been haning around the waters around La Jolla since I was a kid. During all those years, I can count on one hand how many Molas I have seen. Does anyone know why there are so many this year?

Could it have something to do with the cold water that has kept the rest of the fish away? If anyone has some insight, please share.

Excellent video. I bet you need one of those Hobie Pedal things to get shots like that...

Thats what I thought too, until I saw the video but it does appear to be a parasite of some kind. Apparently, they can carry 40 types of parasites and the reason for the belly flops is to try to remove some of it.
