Lake Miramar fishing 2/5
Gonna head up to Lake miramar to do some trout fishing, the lake was stocked this week so the bite should be nice. have caught a bunch of trout in the 3-4lb range there and want to target some bigger ones
I know I might seem a little slow for wanting to catch 3-4lb trout when big yellows are being pulled out of la jolla but I friday fishing there and I am sure tomorrow will be a real parking lot out on the water due to a few recent fishing reports. If anyone would like to join hit me up |
I caught a eleven pound trout, split shotting on a choclate purple vain plastic worm when I was a kid
|
I have been bitten by the freshwater bug as of late...
nuthin' wrong with catchin' trout... 4lb trout on 2lb test...good times for sure! |
I heard the water is below the boat launch, so kayakers and tubers will have the place to themselves. May have to get creative launching...
|
Was just running there a couple days ago and the water was above the launch at the boat ramp. A better place to launch is at the very end of the east wing, You can park on the road by the portapotty, there is a good opening to put the kayak in. You are then right on trout grounds without the paddle. If you get there before sunrise you have the whole area to yourself for a good hour.

So how did you do? I've fished Miramar many times. A few years ago it was basically drained for constuction of a new pumping station or some such thing. It is my understanding that all the hold over trout (ie the big ones) didn't make it. I'm wondering if the lake has bigger models again?

No holdover trout in Miramar.......ever.

I ended up doing some surf fishing with my brothers, they wanted to fish but do not have a kayak so my plans were changed. Trout setup works great for surf perch, I was catching them on almost every other cast.
at Miramar you can still launch in the boat launch area, you just have to launch off of the shore right next to it. They stock Miramar with good size trout but I doubt that any would be able to hold over through the summer and all the poachers. Unfortunately the ranger said that this will most likely be the last year that Miramar is stocked with quality sized fish due to lack of funding. It looks as though Miramar is going down the same path that lake Murray went down. They used to stock large trophy trout in Murray years ago but lack of funding put an end to that. |
I've metered sections of Lake Miramar at 90 ft, and have known people to fish trout there in the summer in those deep spots. So yes they have/had hold over trout. When they did the retrofit thing the lake was bacically drained so trout didn't hold over to get big. I was fishing one of the docks years ago and there was a HUGE trout hanging around in the toolies and under the dock. Everyone freaked out and started trying to hit it in the head with lures. Of course it ignored all this and glided away. That trout was easily 8+ lbs. I don't believe they were stocking them at that size then I assume it was a hold over.

The rangers at Lake Poway claim some of their trout holdover and the depth of Miramar is close to the same, about 100'. I've seen trout pulled out of Poway in late summer from the bottom of the lake. That being the case, San Vicente probably has the nicest selection of holdovers with its depth and lack of pressure since its been closed.

Been fishing Miramar several times in the yak. Have done real well. They do have some large trout there. They have been stocking them large. Caught a limit of five that weighed over twenty five lbs. Haven't caught anything under 2 # largest around 6.

I dont see why Mirimar wouldnt have holdover trout.
Some of the best trout fishing I ever had was at San V in 50' of water on a 100+ deg day. Obviously these fish were able to escape to deeper water if needed but they were holding in 50-60' in August so the temp there must have been comfortable. |
water movement is just as important. if they have plenty of oxygenated water moving they will hold in the deep spots year round.

How do the stockers taste? My wife claimed to have cooked one up before and she said it was horrible. She has been spoiled with Sierra trout in the past but wanted to get some feedback from the recent Miramar trout action....

I'm not a fan. The nebraska tailwalkers that are stocked at Miramar do have the nice looking pink flesh but they still taste like a stocker. Still fun to catch on the ultralight gear. My limits go straight to the freezer and then to the :lobster: nets. |
Little Waters Edge
I have been fishing Jennings for trout ... pink/orange meat. Its been slow
though except early morning. Slow troll powerbait/crawler. Kayaks not allowed. http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...loud9/Fishing/ This was Saturday in the pouring rain. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...ennings001.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...ennings002.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...ennings005.jpg |
Blackcloud, how did it taste?
|
Tasted spectacular. Broiled, with some spices of my wife's choosing (?)...
The lake is plugged with trout now, and the bass are starting to prowl. I like to target trout with small kastmasters from a rental boat starting in early Feb through March if the Pacific is stormy and uninviting. Last weekend even got some good bumps tossing a 7" castaic trout, but nothing stuck. Didn't have the treble stinger hook on it though. duh |
