yak bugs SD Bay 1 15 10
Yet another productive night on the pond.http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/im...es/biggrin.gif
I met up with my buddy Josh (Frady) and launched before dark to the last of an outgoing tide. We paddled the considerable distance to that night's hunting grounds. We arrived at the spot and set unbaited hoops waiting for the light to drop. I had a quick bite to eat and reset the hoops. The crawl started right away and continued for a couple good hours. Pulls usually had bugs with shorts, clickers, and some nice grade keepeers. While on the yak I usually pull the hoops with my head lamp off. The glare of the headlamp and my glasses don't do well together. I pulled up one net and heard flappin in the net. I pulled the hoop over the side and dropped it my lap to measure the bugs I could see highlighted against the lights of shore. I turned on the head lamp and soon realized something else was also caught in the net. A nice size sculpin was thrashing around right between my legs just inches from the boys.http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/im...milies/eek.gif Luckily I hadn't moved from my spot much because I threw the hoop overboard as quickly as I could and the float was a ways away from me. I just had terrible visions of being stuck by a sculpin in places that shouldn't be mentioned. I let the heart beat slow down a little and retrieved the hoop, removed the sculpin, and went back to it. I limited out by 9pm and Josy got six. We headed in to a very nice slack tide and calm water. My favorite paddling conditions. Looks like the weather is going to suck this week for buggin. I'll be chomping at the bit to get out when it clears. <FIELDSET class=fieldset><LEGEND>Attached Thumbnails</LEGEND>http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/at...d-p1151153.jpg http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/at...d-p1161161.jpg http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/at...d-p1161158.jpg </FIELDSET> __________________ |

Good work. Hoop netting is something I aspire to not suck at any hints you might offer up?

There is a guy named Jim Salazar that wrote a book on hooping. You might look that up too. I hear it's pretty good. Other than that....time on the water and trial and error. My first few trips i got skunked. Started to figure the bugs out (a little bit) after a few years of hit and miss. |
Thanks Sherm for the tips,
Ive been about 6 times and got a legal on my first pull of my first trip thought to my self this is gonna be easy and haven't managed to get one after that kind of gave up though since I free dive for them pretty succesfully. thanks again |
