Hobie does it again.
 

Hobie is definitely geared for us lazy kayakers. I just got my new Hobie accessory catalog, now they have an electric motor that mounts in the rudder position or in the Mirage drive hole. But $1900 is over the top, I'll stick with my sail.

While I love the design and engineering that goes into both of these products, I think the idea will fall flat among most of the kayaking community. Especially when you look at the price. (I do love the reverse capibility however). One of the things that I love about kayaking is that the only fuel I use to get to the fishing grounds is breakfast. Sure an electric motors is infinitely "greener" than a gas motor but I am not sure that is the correct perspective.

Kayaking is kayaking, not motor boating. Many Kayakers still have a bit of a problem with those of us peddling our Hobies around. Someone once called it "peddle envy". I, for one, will happily accept a bit of scorn in exchange for my peddles. Even if the Hobie design makes it easier to fish from a kayak, it should be recognized that those of us with these kinds of vessels are still using our bodies to propel the boat. In my view, adding a motor will make the experience somehow less fulfilling.

yup checked er out $1,999. ocean torque, that is the kayak and motor but without the battery. it says to get a group 24 deep cycle or smaller. don't know any thing about these, how much are they?
also wondering about getting in and out of the surf without damage to the prop? it says you can take out the motor but????

Sails, mother shipping and especially motors is not true kayak fishing...I'm in the middle with peddles.

Throwing the yak on the truck and driving to the launch
is the same to me as throwing the yak on the Islander and jumping ship at SCI

I like the Ocean kayak design.

I will have to give a closer inspection.

Dudes who go out to Cortez Bank on a mother ship trip are paddling over deep, wild, great white infested waters. Real wild nature, far from real emergency medical care, which makes the La Jolla kelp seem like a kiddy pool in comparison. I'd call it real kayaking. This comes from someone who has only fished the kiddy pool!

Have to agree here, would be the same as me paddling from Leucadia to LJ...doable, but would have to paddle back.

But...although I have never been on a yak/mothership trip, I still think the 'rules' apply...don't hook from the boat, launch, then land the trophy.

Mother ships? Soon, soon, soon I say...someone to supply hot grub and cold ones, just a paddle away?

And a place to take a nap, other than the yak?

By the way, some of the best "true kayak fishing" guys I know peddle those dang Hobie machines...(I still think they should be handicapped with a late launch and early return during tournaments:D)

If the MLPA had it's way, I would have to consider a Hobie equipped with pedals, paddle, radio, GPS, Flair gun, big battery, outriggers, solar panels, extra water, and a motor. Perhaps, pull another kayak (with solar panels for the green aspect) in case I actually catch somthing worthy of posting. :rolleyes:
