hehe, i'll go ahead an answer for my dad since he's currently in the kitchen preparing dinner. =D

Apparently, the lobster was tangled in fishing line, and my dad's lure caught that line just as he had gotten it down to the bottom. Awhile later, he finally got it reeled in, and he could see his lure in the water, but nothing seemingly attached, even though something was causing the line to move through the water. After completely reeling his line in, there was about 5 feet of line stuck to the hook, and at the end of that was dinner. =)

Of course we all know you are joking. You probably caught it either in a hoop net or bought it at a market since it is illegal to keep it by using hook and line! Now go enjoy that bug!!

I'm sure he understands that you can not LEGALLY catch lobster in a fishing line. It's a good joke though. So just in case...edit your post. :roll:

Actually, it is legal to keep a lobster caught with hook & line, as long as you are not specifically targeting them. Now as to keeping one that is tangled in another line...not sure about that one, but I would guess prolly ok.

Any lobster you keep must be caught either by hand or by hoop net. No exceptions.

not from what i understand... Have been on boats where bugs were hooked, and captain made em throw em back (yes they were in season) also been on boats where captain says (hide it in the bait tank :lol:

I'm definitely not the guru on the subject. The reason I said that is I was fishing off the rocks in La Jolla near Bird Rock area a couple years ago, and trying to catch bass or other fish, and we hooked what we thought was a fish but ended up being a lobster. It wasn't lobster season for another few days though, so we of course threw him back. Happened twice in about a half hour. A DFG warden had climbed down to where we were and was watching us and taking pictures and came over and asked us what we were trying to catch. We told him bass or whatever fish we could catch, and he told us that if we caught a lobster in season that way that it was legal as long as we weren't targeting them. We didn't catch crap for fish either that day. Haven't caught another lobster that way to the day, but that was my understanding of the law...Sorry if incorrect. Definitely want to be on the right side of the law where that is concerned. :?

"Lobsters may only be taken by hoop net or by hand. Divers may not possess any hooked device while diving or attempting to dive for lobsters"

I seem to remember having DFG checking us on the OB pier and making sure lobsters were caught by net.

So I can't gaff one.... :roll:

Even if it is legal, you would be illegal if you did not have a gauge on you at the time you caught it.

Would a small tape ruler count as a gauge?
