La Jolla is back to normal...

The last squid boat left last week and La Jolla is back to it's typical cold-water ghost-town self (the way I like it :)). I decided to give The pond a little time to rest, and the fishing usually shuts down for a while after the circus comes to town. I needed a rest anyway and the surf cooperated during my down time for once. After a few days of playing tennis with the lady and afternoon BBQ's with friends, I was ready for some action again. Not one boat on the water today (3/10/09) until a couple of divers hit the kelp (Yes I asked, they didn't see any). I passed about four kayaks on my way along the point without dropping the yo-yo once, never saw the right signs on the sonar. The water did have that nice WSB green tint to it, though. That big bright full moon and the green water almost makes me want to launch in the dark, almost. A few hours passed and the wind died down nicely. Eventually I located myself in a pretty fishy looking spot, then I ran over a perfect batch of Yellowtail on the meter an hour later. The morning turned into afternoon. I was beginning to break down and even started to put a sabiki on . Considering the fact that I haven't used bait to catch a fish since last november (excluding the squid-bite), this symbolized desperation. Everything looked perfect though: bait all around, clean water pushed in, and the downhill current was ripping like Slater. I had just polished my glasses and was about to drop the sabiki on a deep school when I noticed a small pod of large Yellowtail cruising along in the distance. By the time I swung around to grab my jig-stick they were just at the end of my range. I decided to leave the little jig-stick in the rod-holder (Seeker Ulua 93H), and went for the big gun (Calstar 100J)...good decision.

Given the choice, I would rather have this guy slam the yo-yo on my 30-80 lb rated
5'6" Kencore, but watching that ten foot Calstar bend in half was FREAKIN' SICK!

Um, you spend a little too much time on the water...dang persistence pays off again.

Nice feeeeeesh...esp the 'floating fish hold' pics...

Nice fish! I always enjoy reading your posts, you definately have La Jolla dialed in. You find fish when no one else does. It seems like with the off colored water and recent squid float, it won't be long before the :wsb: bite.

nabeeko 03-11-2009 08:22 AM

you definitely know your stuff. :you_rock:
you gotta stop catching all the fish so people like me have a better chance when making the LJ trip!

I bet that fish just fell into your lap. It takes alot of hard work to find fish when there is no open bite, this guy puts in the effort and the time and aquired knowlege to be rewarded with that yellowtail. Thats what fishing is all about, the time spent hunting and if your sucessful the kill. To me that is a true fisherman.:luxhello:
