LJ 12-10 Late Post
Launched around 5:15am to ankle high surf. Made a few greenbacks on the bottom by tipping the sabiki with squid. I tipped my blue and chrome tady 4/0 (glow back) with a whole squid and ended up hooking about a 10 inch mackerel on it. I sent it back down 120 feet and gave it 2 cranks up after hitting the bottom. 15 minutes later it got slammed and I was on. Unfortunately I pulled the hook 10 minutes into the fight. This is the third fish I have hooked on a deep iron with a treble hook that I have lost. From now on I am all for single hooks...
Heart broken, I kept on fishing. I caught about an 8 inch sardine on the sabiki and sent him down on an 8oz. butterfly jig (with two single hooks on it). I watched the tip of my rod as the bait nervously twitched and was suddenly thumped hard. Another thump followed and then the line started peeling. After a couple of seconds the line stopped and the fish was gone. I instantly grabbed the rod and started jigging it. Seconds later I was on again! After a 20 min. fight I brought this 30.4 lb beauty up. He puked up about 15 squid... http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/2...0021nt3.th.jpghttp://img67.imageshack.us/img67/898...0033pz4.th.jpghttp://img354.imageshack.us/img354/6...0039df7.th.jpg |
Nice report and even nicer fish!
|
Nice winter time toad!:you_rock: Also nice to hear that he puked up some squid. With no real winter weather to speak of (except today) I was wondering if there was going to be any wintertime bite. I have also lost many fish on the yo yo iron. I was wondering if it was because of the treble???

nice. that was a fishy morning (especially for you). Well done.

Why does the treble hook pop off compared to a single? |
Nice work.....

I think they chew the trebble out. With a single there isnt as much hook for them to work out if your keeping good solid preasure on the fish.

I see :D

treble vs siwash hook on jig
imo...
pros of treble: more likely to hook up pros of siwash: easier to release unwanted fish, less likely to come unbuttoned, easier to squid tip (and keep action of jig), allowed for igfa records (not that I have any or realistically hope for any, but still) i use both depending |

Damn Morgan...
I wish I didn't see your fish that morning, because I wasted the next few days in pursuit on the typical winter grounds...much earlier in the morning than I would have liked . Before everyone gets excited, not one other Yellowtail was caught from the "fleet" on the grounds the days following this event, not one :yt:. Plenty of those elusive Thresher Sharks, though ;). I will have to admit, the false alarm was pretty damn exciting, and I now have fresh top-shots on my reels :D.
To expound a little on MKNOTT's comment, the issue comes down to leverage. With a treble, especially during an extended battle with a thumping heavy fish on the end, the original hook point that sinks into the fish might get ripped out by the alternating leverage from the other two points, like pressing your pliers against one of the other shanks. Especially, when you have a fish that changes direction a few times, and is a master of those damn jig-throwing head-shakes. As far as the treble/single-hook debate...I've been torn for years. The facts are: You will hook more fish with the treble, but more fish will stay on with the single :dontknow:. |

Great fish Morgan!
I ended up fishing San Diego Bay last Sunday for a few spotties and not much else. Got blown around real good! I wish I could fish the week days. Wayne |
