Launched at 8am. Water-vis near the launch was 15ft, no waves, no current, no wind, no bait. I went out about 1.5 miles west, searched from the buoys to the kelp and out to the canyon for bait and never saw any on the surface or the meter. I trolled a cd-14 and bounce-balled a gulp squid but never saw any marks except my own lines, where do the fish go? Talked to a guy on the beach who said there was lots of bait near the NW reserve buoy.

I was the guy you talked to on the beach/
Glad Luke and I went to the pier chummed bread for 3 pieces of bait.
Trolled to the bouy on the north end for nada.
Metered ton of bait fish and caught 3 spanish macks. The seal keep us busy moving away from it. I called it a day at noon, but Luke stayed on.
He wants to get a shark. Hope he acomplished his task.

I found greenbacks up north, but nobody to eat them. Put one on the bottom in 20' and could see it swimming. Had to leave early but worked shallow and up to 130' with two rods and the bait went untouched.

I'm glad I didn't miss anything, I chuckled when the alarm went off at 4:30 a.m.:D.

Launched late, went straight to the canyon edge and found a couple acres of Sardines and Greenback Mackerel, plugged the tank in minutes. My plan was to fish the point in the afternoon, with the dropping tides current producer. The acres of bait seemed to be moving pretty quick on the meter, even though the ball was huge I kept slipping off the edge and the schools of bait stretched from 150' down to the surface in a few spots. Even though this wasn't my intended area to fish I decided to soak a couple of baits and see what was pushing the bait around. My mid-column 10" greenie is slammed after a thirty minute stalk on the bait-ball, drag ripping with ridiculous speed, no tail thumps, oh no not again. After getting a good look at the wrong kind (large Thresher), I thumbed the spool till the line snapped. I didn't drop another bait until I made it to my intended Yellowtail area, just to have another encounter with the wrong kind, again.

Sure enough, the three week window of relatively good Thresher Shark fishing continues :rolleyes:. As a matter of fact I've never seen this many around in December before, ridiculous (average fish around 120+ lbs). I know it would be highly looked down upon to say something like "go get'em boys", so I won't.

But....if you are interested in catching a Thresher Shark....tomorrow would be a good time to try (deep water--big bait--larg circle hooks--afternoon bite), good luck! :reel: Oh yeah, bring a buddy to be safe, and don't troll a damn Rapala.

Thanks for the Greenbacks, John P, I trolled them around for a couple of hours after you left for nada.
Earlier when I realized the Sardines were more scarce in shallow than they have been all year, I hit a Rockfish spot for a few minutes with Squid and got a 6+ lb Sheephead.
Other than that, very quiet.
