10/18 Afternoon South LJ
Target species was bonito for the hoops and then some Reds.
After a morning of play at the Del Mar Pumpkin Station with the family, I peddled out to the flotilla outside the kelp off Marine St and managed one good sized bonito on a small megabait. I missed the bite by an hour. Farmed another bonito trolling out to the deeper fishin' grounds. A deep spot was biting OK, but its a long kayak ride in breezy, sloppy, choppy seas. Got a few reds though smaller than usual. (included some recent kayak lobster hooping shots) http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...h101808001.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...h101808004.jpg Recently ... http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...r093008003.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...r093008005.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...s092708014.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...r092708001.jpg |
Wow Larry,
You really have those bottom critters dialed in. Looks Tasty. |
Yummy!
Does the seafood buffet include bottomless bubbly, and plenty of fancy cheese?:drool5::stoned::eating:

That's a very Lo Tide. Nice work on the bugs.

Nice job Larry! Question for you, don't the hobie peddles get in the way of the nets? If peddles are in how do you empty nets on deck? Thanks,Dave......
|
Hi Dave -
Yes pedals would get in the way bigtime. So I've never used the pedals when hooping - need the deck space. Fins down would probably be inviting disaster in the darkness with the current, floating kelp, commercial buoys/ropes, my ropes, etc. I choose the Old School paddle with a paddle leash when hooping, and the Hobie Plug in the mirage drive hole. Less to carry and I usually don't go far anyway. This year though I plan on running deeper combo-trips out to 35-45' deep to catch sheephead while waiting on the bugs. I've never put a net down past 15' yet ... :kayak-surfer: Paddling is fun. |
Hey Dave,
I hoop in MB with no problems with my peddles in, the drops are no more than 30' at the most. I like to see whats in my net before it goes into my lap! so far no problems. I just pick out the keepers and toss them into the dive bag, then toss the rest back to the depths for next year. I have had a couple of tenacious octupussies (sp?) that were a pain to get out of the net though. The only other issue I have found so far is the rudder can make it's own havoc if others don't manage their lines... 25' of black rope floating on the surface in the dark pisses me off... it's a disaster waiting to happen. |
OK, thanks guys........:)

Thanks for the report. You really whack those reds well. I think you should change your nick to redmaster!:luxhello:

Man, I wish I was there for dinner.
That bottle of Olive Oil looks as good as those bugs! |
Nice haul. Tree fish are pretty tasty too!
