Old Man and the Sea 10/1 am
You know where this is going... Launched around 5:30am absolutely beautiful conditions flat glassy conditions. I make some bait just outside the buoys. get a couple rockfish off the bottom with my iron. then I start spotting some bait on the surface I throw the iron and I bring up an approx 4lb Bonita. I have a friend that loves Bonita so I bleed it inside my yak, after the last death shivers I put a rope thru its mouth and gills and let it set in the water while I start another slow troll. After about ten minutes I feel an odd bumping under my kayak. I pull up the 2ft. nylon rope and I see something very close to this
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...g_01/shark.jpg mouth wide open with my Bonita in its mouth. I screamed like a school girl and grabbed my wire cutter and instantly cut my rope. Half of the bonita was gone "that fast" so I took the rope out of its mouth and thru the half eaten Bonita back into the water. I counted my blessings and thought to myself "I won't be hangin' no stinkin bloody fish from the side anymore" |
BS without pics! :)
|
A Great White? That's what your photo implies. I was wondering how often this happens to people who hang their fish over the side (either by sharks or dogs)
|
I think that's why spearfisherman don't carry them around their waist anymore.:D
Glad you're safe. |

The dogs would nail it in short order and if it was tied on good you would be taking a quick swim. Nobody need a National Geographic Moment with a large Mako. |
wow, how long before someone starts trolling for great white with bonita off La Jolla in a kayak?
|
Yuck.
I have a similar story! not fun. |
Well so I am guessing you are ok and I am glad for that!!!
At least LJ will be less crowded now!!!!:D |
wowsers
sumthin i dont wanna experience p |

I think it was a large blue shark, but I only had an instant to cut my line incase it came back for seconds. |
I have had a mako latch onto my bait tube before. he gave a couple pretty good tugs before I was able to pull the tube into the yak.
|
Jim Sammons was torpeded by a Sealion a year or two ago. Dumped him and his rods. The dog was going for Yt that were hanging. Even though the fish is in your possesion it's basically chum when it is hanging.
|
I was paddling across the canyon one dark morning when my bait tube got attacked by something. Pulled my kayak down and back and scarred the crap out of me!
|
I'm betting it was a Mako pup! I never call BS, Fisherman will always tell their tales and wheather they're true or not I always enjoy reading them.
|
Hey Ratdog.........
:luxhello:Could you please post this up on the Surfline board also? Opening day at the local reefs with our first north/west swell was crowded to say the least. A couple of these reports and a big drop in water temps could really add to the warm and fuzzy vibe in the water :).
For those that don't think GWS's cruise the La Jolla coast, you are seriously kidding yourself. These beautiful creatures are below us all the time, year round. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/at...white-7.08.jpg |
getting less crowded with each post!:D
|
Have seen a fin or flash while out off LJ.
Dont know which would be a worse way to go..............getting chomped by the man in the gray suit or whithering away from some disease or old age. I think I would rather exit this world doing something I love like being out on the water challenging mother nature............ |
A big blue could do some serious damage to a foot or hand!
At LJ you know the Gws and big makos are around! Even places places like this shallow water lagoon they sometimes show up. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...a/500/GW-a.jpg Fish and feet out of the water! |
The first and last time I tied a legal halibut to a stringer before bagging it,
it lasted 8 seconds in the water and I came very close to getting flipped as the stringer was, of course, tied VERY securely to the kayak. How to attract a great white .... http://larryl.com/images/2004Summer/...ionA082804.jpg |
any time we go out into the ocean we are a part of the food chain, like it or not. if anybody thinks there is no GWS in LJ :icon_bs:
