Outstanding job on the Halibut PapaDave! I like you short rod set up. Is it custom? I remember seeing posts from Dana about regular halibut catches. It's such a great thing to see the population doing so well down there. Thanks for posting!

MITCHELL 11-15-2025 02:36 PM

I was hoping.....

You found one 22ins

I saw the other video after I posted this comment

How much does live bait cost now on mission bay been years since I bought some. Incase I ever buy some again. BTW I don't go fishing off of reports, they only inspire me.
That's great you almost got a turkey halibut.

Saba, the rod is a Daiwa Triforce or Crossfire. They are 3 feet in length and are fairly stiff, unlike other rods that size. They used to be carried at Turner's for roughly $25 but these days they are not real easy to find due to Daiwa not making them anymore. Bummer. The reel is also not common, it's a ProFishency Tiny Mighty, smaller then a 100 sized baitcaster. Works well for the bays and harbors though. Mine is spooled with 20# braid. I like them.

Mitchell, bait at Mission Bay, San Diego Bay and Dana Point is $25 for a kayak scoop, Oceanside is now $20, was $15. It's enough to last the day, usually. The size can vary depending on what they bring in, I don't get any if they are serving 7-9" sardines though. As for the halibut, the last couple of years I've seen a big improvement in the halibut population, and not only in Mission Bay, but also San Diego Bay, Dana Point and even Newport Harbor. I think it has something to do with the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute and DFW efforts to raise and release them. Several years ago I participated in catching some of their brood stock.

Ya that Hubbs - SeaWorld is a great thing

I was feeding the baby white seabass when I found out I had to go in for cancer surgery and couldn't finish my term but it brought me good karma on the blood moon lunar eclipse 60lb plus 76 ins. White seabass with Murray

Nice, maybe I should go feed them, it's been a long time since I caught a legal one.

MITCHELL 11-26-2025 11:39 AM

I would.....

If I didn't have to Drive across town plus medical issues
I used to get them baby's boiling in the dark early morning they won't do that in the day light.

You should try fishing by the holding pends......

Alot of feeding fish pellets fall through the net even though i was feeding them slowly, and it was always a fish frenzy under the net at feeding time my biggest sandbass 21ins came off their just shy of the cannel in the elbow in a slack tide dead flat
It's thick ell grass under the pends

No kidding? I don't usually go back that far, maybe I'll try it next time things are slow.

MITCHELL 12-02-2025 07:24 AM

Ya kind of pointless going all the way back to the pends.....

Alot of big shallow flat area. Before I started fishing the bay with live mackerel and bounce balling
My biggest halibut 36 ins came right off the knee cap in that pocket where an aircraft carrier was docked. Across from the launch I was in my green scupper pro scraping the bottom with 2 rods padding with the tide. I had on a 3ins gulp shrimp natural color they were real popular back then on my front rod light spinning rod 6lb test
When all the sudden my back rod bait caster got bent I had on a red lead head with a twin tail shartreuse scampi the halibut
filled my whole back scuba tank area can remember padding back so proud to the launch
Now just to go fishing is minimum of 2 days

It seems like a fun setup. 100 sized baitcaster and light light? Heck yeah. Thanks PapaDave
