LiFePO4 batteries and capsizing
 

Hi everyone
I've just bought a new fishing kayak and a LiFeP04. I'm trying to protect everything in the event I capsize my kayak. My understanding is that the BMS electronics in my battery will self-destruct if the kayak turns over. I've been trying to find a really waterproof case for it.

What size battery are you talking about? They vary in size.

Or, get a more stable kayak. I use a 12V/20ah in my two kayaks and run everything (FF, Bait tank and occasionally lights) on that. I'm upgrading that to a 30ah though due to the 20ah running dry on longer trips of about 7-8 hours.

It's a 50Ah. I guess you're just not worried about capsizing. Apparently it happens once in a while :)

BTW I just took out my new Pelican catch mode 100 PWR fishing kayak for the first time. It's under 10 feet and almost 40" wide with a tunnel hull. So it's very stable. I caught a nice smally on the first cast and about an hour later brought in an 18" bruiser. What a blast! Hope you don't mind the sharing.

I don't worry too much about capsizing, I watch the weather, swell, and the wind waves and if it looks iffy then I don't go out. If I'm out and the weather turns ugly, then I head in.

I have a PA14, fairly stable, have a small motor on it to get me out/in a little faster. Unless I get attacked by a large shark (1.0% possible), or experience a tsunami (0.1%) or get hit by a sailboat/yacht/jet ski (10%) then I'm good.

In Florida, The risk of getting hit by a irresponsible boater is by far my greatest concern. 10% chance of getting hit implies 1 out of 10 trips. I have had some close calls, but thankfully it has yet to happen to me. I have had large sharks attack my kayak on 4 occasions.

The dangers rate differently in my waters: Attack by a large shark (2% possible), experience a tsunami (.0001%) possible, getting hit by an irresponsible boater (.01%), getting hit by a sudden high wind rain squall (4%) Chance of flipping in the surf (5%).
