Sheephead Limits
Of course with a limit of only two, it doesn't really seem like a big deal. Its been a while since I had a solid stringer so it was still a good feeling and definitely it was a fun day pulling fish from the kelp. My young apprentice was able to not only catch his first Sheephead but a beautiful 17 incher to boot. I hope the 'man' sees fit to increase that number soon.
Fish were all caught fishing Palos Verdes kelp with shrimp and 1/0 hooks fished near the bottom. Beautiful day for fishing, overcast, light wind and small swells. https://youtu.be/C4LhvwzP2xY |
What's the best way to cook Sheephead?
I was fishing at the bottom about 90' deep over a rockpile and caught a beautiful colorful adult Sheephead (about 20") on a dropper rig with fresh frozen clams. I threw it on my barbecue whole, which was probably a mistake. Because of the thick and thin body shape, some parts were not cooked enough while other thinner parts were almost overcooked. Maybe it is better to fillet first? Or maybe baking in the oven would be more even than the barbecue? |

My wife cooked these latest fish in an air fryer and they turned out very nice :) |
Congratulations on the double limits! Nice goat for Hudson! Looks like San Pedro? :kayak-surfer: :reel:

sheephead are one of my favorite eating fish. has somewhat of a sweet taste that reminds me a bit like crab or lobster.
nice going on the limit. I've wanted to yak PV but i'm not a big fan of surf launches. |
Well done! They are delicious. I like to steam them with butter and salt just like a lobster.
