What is in the name?
For a while I have noticed that many people miss-pronounce and or miss-spell the name of a popular fish. Below is a chart that is guilty of this mistake. I have seen it in a travel book for Baja. A fishing magazine too was guilty of this mistake. I have even seen it in a publication by government in California to teach kids. I have heard otherwise expert fisherman commit the same mistake. Including a sales person for a famous commercial seafood wholesaler. Part of the reason could be the fact that Sheepshead Bay is a famous place on the east coast. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheepshead_Bay,_Brooklyn It has become such a pet peeves that I carry a laminated picture in my wallet with the information about the sheephead. 1-California-Pacific Costal Identification chart. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...159d8c9-me.jpg 2-Wrong name as appears on the chart. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...e3cb4e5-me.jpg 3-Sheepshead (with S), also known as Porgy. It is not found in Pacific ocean. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...4-fcf994f1.jpg 4-Discription. The word was spaced on purpose to highlight the letter S. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...a5f321a-me.jpg 5-sheephead (without S). https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...c595c93-me.jpg 6-Discription. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...ca15c70-me.jpg I was also attacked on line by an angler who wrote, ?I can call it whatever I want?. He was not smart enough to understand that one cannot call a fish by what they want. Thus, he was ignored. On a happier not below is my personal best caught in Baja. 7-My personal best. 15+ lbs. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...702aa1e-me.jpg Many people consider bonito a trash fish. This is a dish made by one of the officers of Stocked On Fishing while fishing at Cedros Island. Although one cannot taste from picture, the looks is one way to show the quality of the dish. 8-Bonito sashimi. Yam, yam. https://www.photos.inherentlydiffere...453c3d0-me.jpg END OF THE RANT |
Yep Atlanta sheepshead and pacific sheepshead are not the same fish.
I don't think I will ever keep a 29in sheepshead again.
The one I caught was really strong and fishy tasting I'm thinking it sat uncleaned in the bottom of a fish hole 🕳 to many days uncleaned even though it was kept at the right temperature. |
Not only that after diving with them over the years you kind of get attached
There are much better fish in the sea to eat. Excluding pier fishing.

I get pissed when watching many different fishing shows in Florida, were they mispronounce Isla Morada. They get the second word right but, how in the hell with all the Spanish speaking people can't they be corrected from Butchering up the word Isla (EES-LA) NOT frickin I like (eye). It frankly is disrespectful.

That chart is just the tip of the iceberg .......
As far as biological rock fish species goes.

"Yep Atlanta sheepshead and pacific sheepshead are not the same fish."
I guess the point that I was making is missed. There is no Pacific sheepshead. There is a Pacific sheephead though. No S. As to the taste, if it is handled properly, to me is second to lobster. To each is own I hear. |
