Reels and Rods
Malibu Johnny hear!
I need a little help in buying and new reel. I have Newell’s and Penn’s and Internationals but. I need help in selecting Bait Caster... Any recommendations? |
Shimano Curado... Haven't used them for SoCal salt but I've used em in Oregon for steelhead and salmon. Great little reels!

So what are you using in your photo?

Avet MXL and shimano TLD star drags... You asked about baitcasters, not conventional reels right?

Conventional reels... I need something that I can put lighter line on. Less than 12lbs. I like to fish spotties and flatties<O:p</O:p
I have a Newell 229 with 12lbs, and a SHIMANO CORSAIR 401A with 12lbs I am looking for and round baitcasting reel |
For light line my favorite reel on the market is the Daiwa Coastal. Super smooth, low maintenance (Ive oiled mine 2 times in 3 years and they are still super smooth), wet drags, and really light.
|
Just saw that you wanted round, Well the Daiwa Luna is awesome. Or the good old Calcutta.

I will check them out. Gotta gift card from Bass Pro shop! can't wait to spend it!
I bought my Malibu at OEX Sunset! Great service and always great fishing advice! I always stumble in and ask way to many questions. Thay always take time to answer them. (mostly about spotties):luxhello: Malibu Johnny! |
Daiwa Sealine-X Sha 20 is around $110. I have this one with 10 pound Pline.
It casts like an expensive reel. |
Instead of the Sealine reels I would go with the new Saltist 20h. Bought it last week and just fished it yesterday and it is well worth the additional $30 dollars as compared to the Sealine. It can cast a mile and has really good drags. The large calico did not stand a chance yesterday  . I also have several sealines, penn's and newells but the Saltist is the choice at around $139. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help...I will pick up a Saltist 20h
When is the next anyone is going to fish Newport? or the next group trip...its about time I learn more about light line fishing  Malibu Johnny! |
Daiwa Saltist 20h is a nice reel.
There's a Plastic Navy bass tournament at Newport tomorrow. Probably 100+ kayak anglers. As far as light line goes, a lot of folks will be using 4# to 10# test. |
If you want to fish light line you dont want a sealine or saltist. the line is prone to getting caught between the spool and frame. Go with the coastal. I fish 4, 6, 8 and 10 on my coastal's.

Hi CJ,
Did not have that problem on Thursday with the plastics. Just a quick note, I was only able to put about 240 yards (50lbs of braided line) on the reel without eventually getting line into the sides while fishing. With that said, I will probably get a second one with-in two weeks. Thanks, Jimmy |
Light line...
4lb? Trout anyone...?
I have 4 and 6 on my trout set up. Maybe I need to take a class! Man I have 12 on most of my stuff! Malibu! :yt: |
CJ, reccomended the Coastal to me as well and I love it, if you are going to fish light line check it out.
