Dana Point Species Id, Bluestriped chub

A friend and I fished Dana Point this morning. One short Halibut and two Spotties. We tried to get small Smelt at the bait reciever for bait. Only the 1ft or more size. However I did land what I think is a Bluestriped Chub?

Has anybody caught or recognize this fish?

about 2 weeks ago I caught a small perch like fish similar to that by the LJ pier while making bait. It had reddish brown stripes down the length of its body and was 3-4" in length. Somebody saw it and said that they catch them in baja all the time.... a good omen for the fishing year here?

I think this is what I caught on the sabiki...

yep. Pretty sure that is the same critter. I looked that one up too, but due to the range I discounted it at first. Thanks.

Pretty sure it's a salema more than a grunt or chub, since it was in/near the kelp.

The one's I've seen diving/caught were more stripey than the mexfish pic stuck with pins, though.

I guess that could be it too although I agree there were more stripes than in the one pictured.

I've caught those night fishing at Catalina before. Always called them squirrel fish. Definitely more pronounced stripes when they're alive, almost a rainbow effect to the stripes.
