Cattle boat report

Friend was on charter boat yesterday
He said they caught 5 yellowtail that were over 30 lbs
Kinda got me excited
Thought I'd share
Boat went outta daveys locker

Aaron&Julie 08-18-2016 06:19 PM

You should ask your friend for more information, and add to your post. Since you wanted to share, and people sometimes listen, it's good to know other tidbits, like were they fishing San Clemente Island where yellows that size are caught regularly or were they offshore after tuna and dorado? Did they hit the right kelp paddy that had yellows under it, but no dodos or tuna? Were other smaller than 30lb yellows caught?

Anyway, just thought I'd add that so you can be even more helpful to others who may want to go out of Newport on a boat trip.

They were fishin Catalina
Had about 15 or so yellows
5 were over 30lbs
Had over 70 anglers
Mostly caught bonito
Don't know what area
Doubt he knows either
Doesn't fish much but he gettin into it
So his report to me didn't have much detail
Believe me
I asked him all I could
All he could really tell me was 5 were 30 pounders
And that they used sardines
I looked most of it up on their website
Anyway
I'll be on the Gailforce on Sunday
Hittin either Catalina or Clemente
I'll put up another report
This time from my actual perspective
So there should be more detail
Well
Hopefully I have something good to report
Can't wait

Good luck to you sir, catch a bunch. But you might see why I asked for second hand further details. One could come up with many scenarios with your first report.

Ro12 08-19-2016 09:14 AM

Well here's a scenario he ran into
He is fishing an 8000 sized spinner with 30lb fluoro
Fly lining a sardine
He hooks up
Reel starts screaming
Rod is bent over
He says he was fighting for like ten minutes
Said he had about half his line left
Would get a little line back
But fish would keep takin off
He is freakin out cuz its biggest he has ever hooked
Deck hand comes over and takes the rod
Fish takes him on a ride around the boat
Deckhand looks at friend and says he should cut his line

Now

What would you do

Ill Bite-

1 )Button down the drag and get that fish UP. OR break it off & grab a heavier set up. Grab a beer too.

2) Fish from own boat or kayak and NOT have to deal with party boat peeps. Prolly drink a cold beer too.

3) Go straight to the galley and buy everyone on the boat a beer because you probably just lost the jackpot fish cuz your spinner wasn't made for the job . :p

4) Toss that spinner overboard, get yourself a beer or three.

5) Fish ON... Doesn't matter as long as you have a cold beer.
:cheers1:

Sweet. Who wants to kayak to Catalina and get on this yellow bite before it fizzles out???

sounds like the freelance. 95% east side of catalina around the can dumps. fly line dines work well, and squid is always a plus if you can get it. alot of 2-5# rats (good size compared to the cookie cutters found at PV and redondo right now). a few monster moss backs.

Ro12 08-19-2016 09:52 PM

I think he shoulda fought it
At least till he broke off or spooled
Think the spinner woulda held up though
Just needed some time and coaching
Thinkin deck hand didn't wanna or didn't know how to deal with it
Same deck hand that tied him a shitty knot
Lost a fish earlier in the day to it
He chose to cut the line
Chose to listen to that expert
I've been givin him a hard time bout it
Got him to jump on gailforce with me on Sunday
We see if we can get that fish in the boat this time

Well got home
Trip was cool
Circled Catalina
Hit a few spots captain felt there would be a bite
Ran into mostly bonita bass and small yellows
Weather nice and sunny
Sea a little choppy
No idea bout water temp or current
Every spot produced
Just not the 30 pounders I was up all night thinkin bout
Bonita put up the best fight
Barely legal bass just came in easy without much fight
So I released em all without a fight too
No need to measure
Just sent em back on their way for the rest of you to catch
Got skunked on the yellows
But a few made it into the boat
Don't know the fish count
But it was a decent little harvest
Got some fillets seasoned and lightly floured
Fresh off the stove
Gonna tear into em with the fam and call it a night
Sorry I don't have the energy right now for details
I'll answer what I can if you care to ask
Have a good one everybody

Nice! Good to know. I went the last week of July and the yellows were finicky. Some were landed, but they only touched live bait on 15-20lb flouro with#2- 1/0 hooks. My bait just kept getting raped by Bonito. We caught about 150 bones and 30 yellows for 50 anglers. I got sick of getting baits shredded by Bonito, so I threw in an anchovy megabait, hooked 6, farmed 3 trying to throw them over the rail. No yellows over 5lbs. We only fished the front side of Catalina. Still fun thoughAttachment 19973

I would have told the deckhand to fuck off.

Either.............
the fish will give up
the angler will give up
the line will snap
the angler will get spooled

I would much rather take a chance on one of those four things happening than to just give up.

Ro12 08-22-2016 10:23 PM

Sibaugh
Nice bonito there
Yeah most guys were fishin 25lb test on rentals
I used mostly my 20lb set up with a 2/0 circle
We were throwin sardines at em
Had a 25lb set up with a tady surface jig that I didn't use
Had a lot of crossed lines
A few bite offs
I had to cut off and retie a lot
Wasn't gonna risk any lures
Glad I brought enough hooks
Over half of our party only fishes this yearly trip
So it was a mission tryin to get everyone to follow their line
Trying to get em all to go for an overnight next year
This our fourth trip
Time to step it up
Especially if it's only once a year
Gonna try and get another trip in with a few guys
Try and head further south
Hopefully soon
A lot more fish caught this year compared to last
Just not the kind I was goin for
Still glad everyone went home with full bags

Jorluivil
Yeah I gave him pretty much the same speech
He was just doing what he thought was right
He don't fish much
So a deckhands advice sounded like the thing to do
Wasn't on that trip he was on
But he was on this one
Did well too
Now we just itchin for another trip
I still got my kayak so I should be just fine
Have yet to get towed around by somethin big on it
One day
Hopefully soon I'll get that sleigh ride

Absolutely! This one dude got 2 on the coltsnipers, and that's when I said f*** using bait, and then hooked up on 6 that first stop on the megabait. I was using a 1oz, so it's about the same size as a coltsniper (for about half the price).
