Vhf?
What are your thoughts on a good vhf at a good price? I want to spend about a 100$ but am willing to here pro's and con's for a bit pricier one if necessary for typical socal fishing (bays, harbors, and rockfish, wsb, yellow, 'butt fishing, etc...) I was looking at standard horizon but flexible there too. Thanks,

I was recently looking into vhf and wasn't sure what I needed either. I knew that I didn't need gps and extra channels. My budget is the same. After texting a buddy, calling a few west marines and a 100 question later lol I came to the conclusion what I needed was something basic like a standard hx150

I think any radio in the $100-150 range should serve you well. It's not like technology changes much from brand to brand.
My handheld Vhf is a 10ish year old, $150 west marine labeled radio. I think standard horizon produced it. I don't remember tho, I'd have to go back and look. It's waterproof and works great. Ive never really needed it much. I chat with my buddy sometimes when we're put together. I also used it to radio the CG a couple months ago when I drained my battery listening to music on a nighttime date, and couldn't fire the engine up (vessel assist doesn't have anyone in the office that late at night). I forgot the battery pack jumper  |
west marine waranty

West Marine VHF 160, this is the one I have. It goes on sale ever so often. Got mine last year for $99.99.

Radio works fine talking and hearing through plastic. I bought one on Craigslist 3 years ago. Still works great. $60, I think. |
I've got a standard issue West Marine model, must be fifteen years old, still works fine.

I bought the Standard Horizon Floating HX300 a couple of years ago from West Marine. Haven't had any problems with it, accidently dropped it in the water and it worked fine, just washed it off with tap water when I got home. You probably don't need GPS unless you don't have a ff that already has it. But redundancy is always good to have just in case.

Thanks again everyone for more info. Looking at getting a standard horizon I think. They got a 20$ rebate going on a lot of their models thru July 31st
