Is dsi good for ocean fishing I just see it being for fresh water anybody use it for saltwater

Had a DSI unit for a while and it was good for identifying bottom structure like small rock piles , individual kelp stringers or pipes but not so good at picking up bait or fish in general. Some will tell you they can read up to 200 ft but I felt it lost most of it's effectiveness deeper than 100 ft and i lost the bottom at 175 ft.

There is a reason you just see it being used by freshwater guys, not great for salty, unless you only fish bays.

Hold on fellas. Here's why I love DSI at La Jolla.

When fishing along the kelp line, which we all do at one time or another,
it is easy to mistake kelp for bait. Real easy. I've lost lots of rigs, weights
and irons making that mistake over and over again.

Not with my Elite 7 DSI unit. Because the kelp stocks really looks like
trees, with a trunk and branches. Not 100 percent of the time, but
a huge difference from standard sonar imaging. I can see it especially
since I can bounce back and forth between sonar imaging and DSI.

I love DSI for halibut fishing, and WSB fishing since I hunt those fish
right at the kelp line.

I second what Yanni said. I have downvision on my Raymarine, similar to DSI I think. I run it split screen with sonar and it's very helpful especially near the kelp line.

I agree with all of that and in fact i think I said all of that in fewer words but the ineffectiveness in deeper water is a problem for me. The unit i had was straight DSI so I didn't have the luxury of switching back and forth. If my next unit comes with DSI along with standard sonar then so be it but I won't shop for it.

Ya the hdi units with both dsi and traditional sonar were "okay" but dsi by itself as rossman said is definitely not for me.

Had a 5 DSI... junk

Make sure you get a transducer that supports dsi.

i have a elite 5 dsi...not sure about the dsi part. still learning. color and chart map is great. other than the trip report...yet to get that right. i am no expert and would like to be.

Rossman you always say less than I do! Maybe that's why
you catch more fish than me!!

Or its the fact that Rossman is living the dream 5 min from a launch few of us will ever use.

It's funny, I have been involved in a thread on another forum regarding how close you should fish to another kayaker without being considered to be invading their space. I always figured a couple jig casts away would be as close as you should come but I suspect that is getting more difficult in LJ. For me personally now I try to stay at least 100 miles from the closest kayaker but some times when the bite is hot, I will find them within 50 miles. Getting too crowded here.
