Live bait cost at Dana Point.

I was invited to go out of the Dana Point harbor to fish on a nice Boston Whaler boat.

I opted to pay for live bait, and paid $25.00 for I/2 scoop of sardines!

That meant the full scoop costs $50.00!

Is that the going rate, or did we got taken because of the nice "expensive" looking boat?

I also introduced myself to some kayakers there.

We ended up catching a lot of sand dabs and one ocean white fish.

1/2 Scoop (5 pounds) $25.00

1 Scoop (10 pounds) $35.00

11/2 Scoop (15 pounds) $55.00

Thanks for the quick reply.

I feel better now. We tried some, but did better with squid and caught sand dabs.

I kept the unused ones for chum.

Hah it was nice seeing you. I was one of the guys that said hello. I paid 10 (actually Silbaugh did) dollars to fill up Hobie Livewell.

That was a nice boat, too bad the fishing not too good. We did not have much better luck. I caught one sculpin that went right back into the ocean.

Nice seeing you guys.

Maybe I can join you some day.

You think you over paid for bait ($50) just because you were on a whaler?? WOW.
My guess is you Prolly didn't leave a tip either?
You can always make your own bait...

Paddles away & shakes head.

Mahigeer 03-28-2016 03:18 PM

You guessed right about the tip.

I had a "sticker" shock when I heard $25.00 for 1/2 scoop.

I will do better if I am back again.

The boat owner is learning about the fish finder. We were anchored, and it kept showing different bottoms.

He needs to spend more time on water to get FF readings right.

Sand dabs were delicious at lunch today.

Sand dabs are one of my favorites to eat, I need to find where to fish for them.

I've fished close to the mouth but not the actual mouth. I guess I need to paddle a little farther. Any suggestions on how deep to find them, I'm guessing squid chunks should be a good bait. I think I'll try a trip this week if the weather calms down. Thanks for the tip on Newport, it is much appreciated.

Did you catch the sand dabs on sardines?

I can't remember how deep I got them, but if you're working over the 100' zones you should have no problem finding them.

We did not get any action on live sardines.

We saw one spot where a sea lion was catching fish and the birds were on top, but did not have any action.

The sand dabs are usually deep. We got them at about 240' per FF.

I had left my sand dab rig at home, so I used squid. They have small mouth to go after sardines.

I used the head part and most of the time I got my bait back.

Small mouths? They sure don't think so.

I've caught some of them dabbers on live sardines. And yea always tip the bait guys a few bucks for kayak scoops. They always give up some usually timely fishing info if you ask as well, that alone is worth a tip.

Mahigeer 03-29-2016 12:52 PM

I stand correct it.
