Late report for Monday
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...2-11-07-11.jpg
My son and daughter in law are in town from Japan with my new grandson. I told them before they left we would have yellow tail sashimi. Got up early but it was 37 degrees in my yard , so I went back to bed. Afternoon had a little wind on it, but was still nice. Easy bait at the can. I decided to just head straight out when I see birds diving way out side. I flew out as fast as I could stopping just short of the boil. Thats when I noticed my bail was open and 500 yards of line was out with my surface iron on it. As I was cranking the line in ,my fly line goes off. I started to set the reel with the iron on it down when the fly line goes still. I went ahead and pulled the rest of the line in and got one shot at the boil that came right at me. Hook up. I new it was'nt that big, but I did have 40 lb line on and I was in 150 ft depth, so I horsed it in. Before I got it in, the boils quit, the birds left and for an hour I never saw anything, so I came in. 16 lbs on the b/w surface iron. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...12-11-07-1.jpg Thanks Don for making my fish look so big. Date on the photo is wrong. 12 10 2007 |
Way to go Paul, haven't seen you out there in a while. Let us know what your kids think of our local yellowtail. I understand that Japanese yellowtail are a little different and make true hamachi, usually farm fattened, and our local yellowtail sashimi is called hiramasa. I've never been able to cut the "melt in your mouth" sashimi from ours, good but not like you get from sushi restaurants. But my kids like anything with wasabi, even green beans.

I just got back from Japan about 2 weeks ago, we caught about 15 yelowtail in Tokyo bay and about 30 in Shimoda, they were smaller than here but they tasted just the same.

sharp knife = good sashimi
I've found that ceramic knives (mine's from Kyocera) are great for slicing the YT really thin ;). Ceramic stays very sharp for a long time. The knives are brittle though -- can't drop or bang them against things or they will chip.
