RIP Mr. Thompkins
Thank you for your endless and life long pursuit of helping balance our multi uses with nature and nature itself. Geno |
WOW !
He will be missed. :( The conservation movement has lost a great advocate and leader! Along with Yvon Chouinard (of Patagonia) he was one of my conservationist heros. R.I.P. Mr. Thompson FFY :sifone: |
Farewell Mr. Tompkins
:( The Obituary was moving. Long live the spirit of adventure! ----- 2.2 million acres he acquired in efforts to conserve and preserve nature. That stretches the imagination. More interesting details and adventures here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Tompkins Interesting recap by National Geographic: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2...von-chouinard/ |
Yup that's my feelings as well...
Love that his wife would say she would not be surprised by his " near death experiences every time he came home". The man knew how to live and at the same time be an advocate for the environment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I met his wife in the 80's at some Patagonia sales in Ventura. My dad was sponsored by Patagonia for fly fishing back then. She was the CEO of Patagonia prior to marrying Doug. He did a lot for recreation.

heres a report in Alpinist Magazine.
After a kayaking accident on Tuesday afternoon, December 8, Douglas Tompkins, a long-time adventurer, climber, conservationist and founder of The North Face, died in southern Chile's Patagonia region. Tompkins was paddling with Rick Ridgeway, Patagonia vice president and part of the first American team to summit K2; Jib Ellison, river guide and Blue Skye founder; Weston Boyles, Rios to Rivers founder and conservationist; and Lorenzo Alvarez, owner of adventure travel outfitter Bio Bio Expeditions. The group was kayaking in Lago General Carrerra, a large lake that straddles the Chile-Argentina border. Yvon Chouinard, long-time climber and Patagonia founder, was fishing on the shoreline. About 11 in the morning, high winds and nine-foot waves capsized a two-person kayak carrying Ridgeway and Tompkins, setting the men adrift in the lake's Avellano sector. |
