What species do you want to target?

That will determine your choices more so than the fact that you want to use it on a kayak

How much can spend? That is an important factor too.

One rod I definitely recommend is the Ahi Sabiki rod. It holds all of the hooks of a Bait (Sabiki) rig inside the rod, which is a hollow tube. It prevents having to worry about all of those dangling hooks.

If you are comfortable using a low profile reel, then that should be used with it. You can use a spinning reel, but due to steeper angle, it will cut in your casting distance.

On a kayak that is not important, but I use it on the piers, and it does make a difference.

If you already have gear for bass that will work on your kayak to get you started
