I want your expert kayaker's opinion on this. Do you think this cart will hold up for a couple of seasons or should I just go ahead and build one? I'm looking to use it for beach launches. I know people say a PVC DIY cart is cheap to build but for larger wheels, PVC, and the hardware the costs are roughly the same as this cart with an added dose of trial and error. Thanks gents!

Wheels look plastic. Maybe change them out for better ones easier for the sand.

It looks a little flimsy and might last for the couple seasons you are asking out of it. But those wheels are not good for sand. They will dig right into soft sand and you will end up dragging the yak through the dry sand till you get to the wet sand. The wheels would work for all other terrain. Just not dry soft sand.


The price is right. I just don't think that you will be happy with those wheels for beach launches.

that looks like a $35 cart

Its a 50.00 cart after shipping and tax. Look for a used one. Trust me spend the money and get a nice one.

Don't be cheap!


Buy a good kayak cart, preferably not a scupper cart....I don't like them personally....

Your scuppers won't last the season with that cart.

Wood is cheap, and customize able...lel. Wheels at Harbor freight are $4.
Hardware at Home Depo (intentionally left out the "t"....because if there's only two things I can't stand....it's people's intolerence for other people....and the French.) is like $5-6. My only recommendations are as follows:
1. Use the chop saw to cut the wood.
2. Crack a beer
3. Screw it all together
4. Stand back and admire:cheers1:
*Be sure not to jumble the order or counting to ten might be a challenge*

This is mine before I modified it. It now sits waaaay lower and has a center "fin" that fits up into my mirage drive opening. It also has a kickstand now. Like the others said, these wheels don't work on soft sand, but it hasn't really affected where I use it so I don't care. Maybe if I need in the future I can chg. out to the "Power Wheels" off of a kids toy car.

S-Dawg, this has some really cool ingenious solutions to problems I often deal with.
1. The handle to roll it under is awesome!
2. The bow strap to limit the rearward movement
3. Non-skid shelving works like glue.
4. Great overall DIY!!

I purchased this one a few months back. Inflated the tires and by morning both tubes popped. It's light weight and seems that it will work but I didn't get to use it yet. I went back to my original PVC build.

I might just buy replacement tubes and not overinflate.

Interesting responses guys. They were not what I was expecting. Thanks for the input! I'll keep looking around for a better option.

I have this one actually, but the wheels are utterly useless on the sand. The stock inner tubes are not the greatest. One popped on me due to a doh! move of leaving them highly inflated in a hot garage.

I have one you can have for free if you want it. It's exactly what you posted but it has better wheels.

Ooo... that'd be great! I'm probably going to have to decline though since I'm in the SGV. The cost of gas to get down there and back will be more than the cart's value. I really appreciate it though. It's very generous of you.
