La Jolla Tournament Yellow 09/08/07
 

I fished the Steve Moyer La Jolla Shores tournament on Saturday with
many from the WCW.

Fishing was slow overall, and mackerel seemed
difficult to catch. I used one of the few sardines from the tournament's
bait boat.

Fortunately I got bit and was able to land a nice yellowtail on tournament
day. This is my first yellowtail of 2007. Time on the water has been
limited this year as I've been doing a bit more lake fishing with the kids.
My bluegill skills are much improved, the kayak catching seems to be
mediocre this summer anyway.

This 31 pounder is the second largest yellowtail I've caught from a kayak!

First prize was a new Hobie Revolution Kayak and $400 cash. The raffle
prize list was just incredible this year and they raised over $12K for the
American Cancer Society.

Here are some on the water shots of the winning 31 lb yellowtail caught
on a live sardine on 20# line using a 2 oz sliding egg sinker, an hour after
my late launch.

Life getting in the way?
 

That seems to be a common problem for many of us, life gets in the way of fishing. As said, great timing on catching your first YT for 2007. I know that feeling (and the lack of time on the water) really well this year.

I didn't go but it sounds like it was a good time by all but those who take these things too seriously.

Im just curious were did you put your fish on the adventure? Did you leave it in the water and drag it behind you?

I have an adventure also with the internal kaya bait tank, was thinking of getting rid of the milk crate in the back and adding more rocket launchers for rod storage so I have a place to put fish in rear tank well.

Just wondering what other guys with hobies do for big fish storage.

You don't ever want to leave your fish in the water and drag it - very bad idea. People who were yanked off of their kayaks by sea lion will tell you - there were multiple incidents in the last few years.

put it under the front hatch, you could fit a whale in their.

Slayer, for the few times that I have landed 25#+ fish on the Adventure
kayak, I have never stowed them below deck as the ensuing clean-up job
inside the stinky hull would be no picnic. I'm a clean freak :rolleyes:.

You might never get all the fish slime out of there, and may remember
that day for quite awhile!

If you got one of those big Game Bags and the fish fits, that would work.

The back tank well would work if you headed for the beach asap.

I first secure the trophy with a cord or gameclip. Set the fish on the belly
next to the pedal drive with head under your thigh so you can keep
pedalling. At a minimum, keep the fish wet and cover with a white plastic
bag or wet gunnysack and get them on ice ASAP.

Some fish can be kept in the water with minimal risk by "hiding" them in a
white bag. My big halibut were usually stringered, then I push the stringer
spike thru the bottom corner of a xlarge white trash compactor bag. Make
sure to tie the open end corners of the bag together to close tightly with
the fish tail inside.

Nice fish.:cool: My buddy Jim and I are behind you in that first pic. I saw those birds workin by you and tried to get there before you saw them. I just couldn't paddle fast enough. ;) Great job. We watched you fight that fish for a while. You played him well.

The fish game bag looks like the ticket. So you put the fish next to the peddle drive, Ok Cool. I did'nt think leaving the fish in the water and dragging it around was a good idea, the camo job with the bag sounds like a good trick.

I caught a 37" 20.5lb butt in july and had to put the fish cross ways (head and tail almost touching the water) under my legs to get the fish back. Now im trying to figure out a way to store fish. Thanks for you input.
