Seal Beach Sharks?!

Let's say I wanted to kayak around the jetty that extends from seal beach. Should I be concerned about these sightings? Please excuse my question if it seems lame. I'm still a newbie, and the question is being posed mainly by my wife who doesn't want me to go out because she has a phobia of sharks from watching Jaws at a young age.

You're entering into their habitat so you always take a calculated risk every time you enter the ocean. The risk is very low, but it does happen. Whatever you do don't show this thread to your wife!

I find it funny that this made news.. Sharks in the water.

Coming up tonight on the 10:00 news... Hawks were sited flying at 700 feet... Then an amazing story about mountain lion spotted in the Santa Monica mountains..

You'll be fine, just go fishing and be happy.

Yeah, what he said.

Can you imagine what my wife would say if she saw this?

Hope she doesn't watch Shark Week 2015.

Try and catch me on Great White Serial Killer 2.

hammer head shark

You should ask OCTICO about the time a hammerhead circled his kayak and then rammed into it and he fell in the water with it. As Octico was trying to get back in his yak, he gets dragged down and held for about 3 mins. It was very traumatic after losing his leg in the shark attack. He goes by Ahab now.

I wondered what that helicopter was hanging around for yesterday. Just walked across to see if there were signs posted. Surfers were out. Helicopter hovering over Seal Beach, light fog so probably waiting for it to clear.

The first time my wife asked about GWS I tried to reduce her fears by quoting the commonly heard statistics "you are at a greater risk of being struck by lightning or killed by a falling coconut than being attacked by a shark". She then suggested I remove all metal from kayak/rods/reels/etc and keep at 50yds away from all coconut trees. Now I hide all shark reports and keep the tv off during shark week.
