Been back at it again for awhile, and today finally paid off. Julie was the victor.
Launch before 6AM, and made an even mix of bait, about 18 each. After "Riding the storm out" the weather improved greatly. We saw lightening hit the water 3 times, 3 episodes of rain, and each was far worse than the previous. Pretty beat by now, we started the last efforts towards the launch. About 11:45 Julie's bit nicely. Fish kelps her quickly. But, she works at it for 30 minutes or more. Up comes the biggest clump of kelp we've experienced. We can't even see the fish, but assume it's in there. Aaron grabs the leader, reaches in, and finds it's mouth. One re-grip later in the gills he pulls up Julie's 25lber. Our motto pays off, "Never say die". http://i745.photobucket.com/albums/x...icaledited.jpgFish on ice, to be filleted tomorrow, Hamachi soon after. |
Wow now that's awesome. Thanks for timely report :) felt the thunder as car alarms went off in mission bay this morning. Conditions got better by the afternoon.

So hook the kelp beds, reel it in, THEN pluck the yellow out of it. Why didn't I think of that :p
|
Nice team effort! Congratulations.
:cheers1: |
Awesome!

Very nice. Glad you were able to get it out of the kelp.

Sometimes it takes nasty weather to bring out the tails. I know you two have showed up but the fish haven't lately. Congrats Julie, now it's Aaron's turn.:)

Nice work!
It's a toad. |
Thanks y'all.
We don't know how long it will take for repairs, but the all-winter long drainage repair at the launch at La Jolla was a flop. One summer storm and all those $$$(millions?) and the repairs went kaput! We just saw on the webcam, new repairs are underway. Only one access was available yesterday, to and from the beach. We ended up carrying both kayaks and all the gear to the end of the street for loading. We just heard many people were hit by lightening in Venice beach from that storm, one killed. Glad we didn't make the list down here, and at least we got our yellowtail :kayak-surfer: |
Hell yeah! :cheers1:
|
That gaff has seen some HUGE fish.
Is Julie's halibut record still standing? |
Yes, we believe her record still stands.
|
Awesome fish! I guess it pays to wait out the weather
