Point Loma kelp just outside of SD bay?
Heading down to the big bay this sat with a buddy and want to put him on fish as he's new to fishing. Are they biting in that kelp just north of the point? If not any tips for fishin SD bay are welcom too :) plan is to get the spotties if they're biting, or drift for butts if we can find good size macs
Appreciate it in advance. :notworthy: |
Tidelands is always a guarantee.

Did you say north of Point Loma? That's a long paddle, to get into the fishable kelp. You'll need to stay clear of the Marine Reserve (see link).

Agreed. That's a loooong paddle/peddle to the kelp north of Pt Loma. Did it only once (about 2 hours each way) and wouldn't want to make the treck again unless there was a good reason. One tip, if you go - don't fight the tide. I'm not very expirienced but think that tide really added to the peddle time for me and worked against me both ways. One plus - no waves to the face when launching. Happy hunting!

Its do-able but like others said, its a long way. Watch for the mlpa zones. Most of my trips out the mouth of the bay have been to surf. Here's a tip for you, time the tides in the direction you want to go. Seriously, a knot or 3 moving against you makes a long paddle/peddle a looooong one. Mike

Another option to fish the kelp, is heading out from Mission Bay. Once you leave the bay you can head south just past the OB Pier and fish the kelp there. I think it would be a lot shorter paddle to fish some kelp than from the San Diego Bay.

I fished Tidelands last Sunday and caught a lot of spotties. None of them were all that large, only 2 were legal sized, but there were enough of them to make it a fun morning. It's a quick paddle out to the drop off zone and there are plenty of fish. No need to paddle 2 hours each way unless you're looking to catch calicos.
