Sat 6/14....second time out at LJ...no fish
 

Nice easy launch at about 6:15, headed out to the kelp and caught three lively macs, not the greenbacks but good enough. Trolled on a fly line up until about 12:30, tossed the iron too. No luck but a good second time out to get LJ dialed in. Only lost the tennis ball off my gaff coming in.

"not the greenbacks, but good enough"???

Rarely are yellows keyed in on spanish. Every report this week
mentioned greenbacks. If you tossed out anything but greenbacks
you wasted alot of time and gas and learned nothing.

This week, every yellowtail belly I split open was full of greenies.
"Match the Hatch" It really works.

And, this past week, the yellows were so picky, they ignored irons,
keying in on only greenies.

Figuring out the pattern is key. But figuring out what went wrong
is part of figuring out the pattern.

If you do a search on the past 10 yrs, 99% of the yellowtail catch reports
mention greenies. Why is that??

Believe in the greenie.

I wonder if that has something to do with the spiky dorsal fin on the back of the Spanish? I get stabbed by them more often then greenies. The greens definitely have a lot more life. Could flyline a nose hooked greenback for hours and it would still swim like you just took it off of your sabiki.

Thanks for report. I'm a firm believer in the greenies as well for almost all gamefish based on others and my own experience. Won't start trolling till I get some. Case in point I had mostly Spanish and 2 greenies last week and after 2 hours of trolling the "lively" Spanish for nada decided to try the greenie and sure enough got hit in less than five minutes on WSB. They are stronger swimmers and stay more active than other bait for me. I hate catching them on sabiki but based in another report will try a simple dropper loop as they always get tangled no matter how much weight or how hard I pull.

I prefer to fish the green macks, but if they are scarce fish the bait you can catch. I caught a yt last Wednesday on a surface iron that must have been hunting all through the water column; it had squid, rockfish, and smelt or grunion in it. It even had a small stone in it's stomach. My first kayak yt in LJ was on a jumbo smelt. Greenies are better, usually, but if you catch Spanish or even smelt you can still be in the game. Keep banging away at LJ and good things will happen. I 2nd that I've caught many yellows on Spanish greenies are preferred cause there much hardier of a bait and seem to trigger a bite cause they act more lively even after trolling one for hours but that being said if there on the chew they will take anything
