6-15 PL Kelp
4 Attachment(s)
Decided to launch from Dog Beach and see how far south I could get in a few hours. Launched at about 5 and noticed a couple going for an early morning skinny-dip just down the beach from me. lolSurf was pretty friendly, only took one over the bow. Made a couple sardines and a handful of macs before my sabiki was tangled into an impressive snarl that was beyond my patience. Trolled those and some frozen squid all the way down along the drop off past Sunset Cliffs Park until I was about straight out from the Navy Fleet Training Center up on the hill for nothing but a couple of nibbled baits. As daylight set in I noticed a wicked red tide. :(
Attachment 149 Saw some birds diving further out but it turned out to be a waste of energy. Headed back towards land and picked up a ling on a mack trap rig... Attachment 150 On the way back north I hopped from kelp canopy to canopy pot-holing for calicos and only managed this guy on a Trix... Attachment 151 Beautiful conditions minus the red tide but not very exciting. Both fish released. Passed a couple of guys in inflatables on the way down who were going to try to get in on the calicos. Attachment 152 |
People fish places other than La Jolla? Thanks for the report. Bummer about the red tide.

Thanks for the report. (that was me skinny dipping, BTW - nothing is sexier than a moonlight swim in the mouth of the San Diego river.) :cheers1:
