6/14 PM WFO...
...squid!
http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...4/IMGP0272.JPG After the third tug and release, I finally hooked one. In my excitement I gaffed the wrong end and got hosed. Threw on the squid jig and immediately caught another. Gaffed that one properly and stayed dry. Needed chum for the BD YT event this weekend so it was the next best thing after a fish. |
Nice Job Brad!!! Those are some big squirts!

All three of mine were completely white. I had never caught one before, and they turned out to be a lot easier to handle than I thought, and now I know that my squid jig works. One of them got a tentacle on my hand. I wouldn't say it hurt, but it wasn't pleasant.

sweet squid next time try and tie a little green glow stick on the bottom of the jig. Works like a bastard caught more than i could imagine a couple of weeks ago had to stop fishing because they were jumping on the boat.
shhhhh it's a secret:cool: |
I took a look at my pictures. Only the first one, the one I pulled on board, was all white.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/IMGP0798.jpg The rest had some red. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/IMGP0793.jpg This bite was WFO, no need for glow sticks. |
I caught some during the day a couple years back. Several big squirts came up with the hung squid and stayed around the yak for a short time. That was a little nerveracking. Can't imagine at night. Did they come up to feed or did you get them down low?
Nice job on the calamari.:luxhello: |
Those squid can change color from solid red to solid white and everywhere in between. I've caught some in baja that have flashed red to white and then back again at boatside, not even the slightest combination of colors between flashes. Maybe the all white is their "oh @#$%" color :D Really cool animals, too bad they eat all the fish :(
|
nice going. were they pretty much everywhere? might have to drop a squid jig tomorrow morning.
|
Mine came up red then shimmered and flashed while on deck. I was being a little facetious with this post since I really didn't intend or want to catch these things, but a few for bait is fine. First one or two are fun, then it gets silly. And getting hosed sucks.
|
Cool... How big are they? It's difficult for me to get a perspective in those shots.
|
About 15lb.

I took multiple hits, but only one of them got me good in the face and the water ran down inside my splash jacket. It was something different to catch, but they weren't all that much fun. They don't really pull drag, and it feels like you're pulling up a bag of sand. |
Man, That makes me a little leery of hopping in the water with the speargun this weekend. . . How deep were they?
Kind of cool to see the color phases of em. |
