Sad to hear, good business man and innovator. Dam, on the same day I buy my first hobie.

Hobie Alter and Phil Edwards were major influences to those of us growing up in North County in the seventies. We surfed Hobie longboards and learned how to sail with Hobie cats. When we broke parts surfing the boats at Tamarack, we were always able to get a "bro deal" on replacements either at Hobie Dana Point or Hobie Oceanside.
I still paddle a Hobie Quest, one of their first kayaks, so since about 1971, I've had a Hobie on the side of the house, in the garage or in the back yard. Hobie Alter was a true visionary of the ocean lifestyle we all wanted to live. He was a good man as well. History has turned a page today. |
Lifelong fan of Hobie Alter
As a skateboarder in high school, 35 years ago, Hobie was always around. Later I owned a 16' hobiecat and sailed it at Lake Isabella. That was some of the most fun I have ever had. Now as an oldie, I'm on an outback and love it. Thank you Hobie Alter.

How does that work with no beach launching, is that for all kayakers?

I don't know Doheny/Dana, but thought I might go. Can anyone advise on Dana Point Harbor launch location and time and distances involved between there and Doheny? Any launch location words-to-the-wise?

Kayakers regularly launch from Doheny, next to the breakwater. On the sat map from Google, Doheny State Beach is the sand on the far right. I don't know whether that will be allowed for Hobie's paddle out.
Doheny is immediately next to Dana Pt Harbor. The launch ramp is just inside the jaws, at the E in Embarcadero Place. It's a paid ramp - there's a parking fee. For a free launch and free parking, Mother's / Baby's Beach is deep inside Dana Pt Harbor below the headlands. It's labeled Dana Cove Park. That would be a 1 mile paddle one-way. HTH. For those unfamiliar with the area, the paddle north to Dana Pt itself is well worthwhile. Very scenic, usually a lot of kelp. Occasional WSB, but it's no LJ. Or you could head south of Doheny to Capo Reef. It's shallow water with a lot of rocky structure and scattered kelp, good for calicos. |
Is says at the bottom of the image that Doheny will not allow boat/kayak beach launches and to use Dana Harbor's launch ramp instead.
