I had a 1996 200HP 2 stroke..........what's wrong with it?

It starts up fine but it won't go into gear. Forward or reverse doesn't work.

The best way to find out if the cable is busted it to remove the cowling, push forward on the throttle and see if it engages the shaft that tells the engine to go forward or reserve(circled in red). If I remember correctly once the shaft engages the engine another cable will take over and control the speed.

I changed those cables on my engine once, it took a few hours to do it but it was because I took my time and was doing it solo. Another thing to check is the shaft that the forward/reverse cable controls, its hard to see it because of the parts that cover it but they are known to go bad. Basically, the way is works is the cable is connected to a plate, that plate is welded onto a shaft and that shaft goes into the engine and when it moves forward or back it engages the engine. Apparently, the weld that holds the plate to the shaft is known to fail after a while because of the pressure that it put on it.
I forgot to ask earlier, but are you able to rev the engine if you push forward or back on the throttle? If its revs but does not engage its safe to say its the cable or the shaft. |
My friend's husband is an honest and good boat mechanic. If you like I can send you his number tomorrow.

This is great. I didn't think I would get this great of a response. Awesome! I have taken the cover off and there's been a neighbor and a man at the boat wash station that have taught me a couple of thing. I took out the drew at the bottom of the prop assembly and the magnet has metal clippings. I'm definitely gonna take ur advice on this. BWE is great!!
