Cabrillo Monument beach front

My fishing buddy JSerrano set out today in San Diego Bay at 7am headed for the "big waters edge" :reel: we made it to the bait barge for some sardines and moved Westward to the open water. Super high tide moved us quickly to the open water. By lunch the live bait brought no hits, but never fret our swim baits pulled 2 nice bass and 1 unknown, shown in the pic. Does anyone know what the fish on the left is, we heard it might be a "raci"????? Fun day with fishing buddies , more to come ,

Kelpfish!
|
Very cool, kelpfish....
Has anyone eaten this type of fish, is it good? |
It's a juvenile black seabass!
Just kidding, but it could have been. I wouldn't keep a fish if I didn't know what species it was. ;) |
Wrasse are different fish altogether. As far as Kelpfish, personally I always just release them but I'm curious to know if they can be eaten?!

I appreciate all of the feedback gents. I am very new to the sport and working diligently to learn. I agree that going forward if I dont know what type of fish I will be releasing. Thanks and keep the comments and information coming....

Kelpfish are good eats. The real question is do they count as meat or vegetable?
