Crazy question.

Has anyone ever kayaked from dana point to catalina?

todd one 09-01-2013 07:22 PM

I use to work with a guy that raced kayaks. His team would take a boat over and race the kayaks back.

jorluivil 09-01-2013 07:36 PM

I met a guy at cabrillo that said he and his brother kayaked to Catalina and came back via the Marina del Rey flyer. If I remember correctly he said it took something like 8hrs to get there.

i'd go with you if i were there. i posted up about it a couple times with no takers and alot of "what if" comments.

if not for the fishing, just for the ride would be awesome!

What? appox. 22 miles each way?
8 hours if the conditions were right would work, strong legs or healthy arms!

I think I wanna try it

Deffinately not going to do it in my xfactor though. I need to start seriously training if I wanna do this.

22 miles isn't bad but it can kick up out there. nothing a sit on top can't handle though. ya, you might get dumped but it happens to everyone.

i'd say go for it. We did a trip that was around 25 miles on saturday with no issues. 5 hobies and 3 paddle yaks made the trip.

Wow what a paddle that would be. Definitely gonna need GPS and a gel seat. I don't think I'd want to push water on a stealth for that distance.

I would attach a sail and let the winds take me there while sipping a nice beverage :D

Also, the following is a nice article on someone else's experience...

A group of guys from Fastlane did it in adventure kayaks with sails and camped and fished over there -

Years ago a kayaker, Ed Gillette, left California and kayaked to HAWAII, alone and unassisted. That was an epic trip!

Linglifter 09-02-2013 09:00 AM

I would do it in my hobie. We used to go out 7 miles one way up north for halibut. How would we get back?

JarrodMc 09-15-2013 07:53 AM

I'm down. when are we going?

Sounds like fun, Bob, I'm in with the AI's. I'll be coming from Costa Rica, so we will have to determine a meeting point/coordinates somewhere beyond halfway. If I can catch the front of a tropical storm/hurricane down here, I probably could beat you there.:luxhello:

Ed was in his late 20's or early 30's. At 65 I don't think so! Could not even sail downwind to CR at my age. Do they fly yaks to CR?

I don't know. I've never seen one with wings before. Wonder if the mirage drive could be modified. ;)

No, the airlines are really getting strict on weight/size limits. It would have to be a much shorter yak than the AI. There is a dealer in Panama City, closest one, who I've ordered thru. But I've got a brand new Revo 13 with my AI in CR upon my return, your more than welcome to use, would be fun. I'll pm you later with details.:reeling:
