My Cherry Poppin YT
3 Attachment(s)
I launched at 9am, pabbled to the pier, made 9 blue back macs, trolled one high, one low w/2oz lead, cornered around the yellow bouy, headed out to 97 ft and the low line went zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Damn that is a good sound! I've worked hard at setting up and finding time to be on the water. Finally, my first YT from the yak. I proceeded to get sunburnt and release a hungry calico before deciding to go clean my fish. But on the way in I couldn't stop casting, nice drift toward the launch and all. About the 18th one and I hooked up hard on the iron. First time for that strong of a fish but my drag was too tight and I was the fish killer so I was horsing it too much and it came unbuttoned. At least I was rejuvinated and made a few more drifts and 50 more yoyos in 100 ft.
All in all it was a beautiful day, I saw only one other kayak in the distance and only 3 or 4 pbers all day. The surf was 1-2ft, water was clear with some brown slime on top in places, no wind in the morning but by 1pm it kicked up pretty good. |
I'm confused.. you caught the YT on the 2 oz flyliner and landed it and got bit on the YO YO and lost it or you lost both fish? If you landed one, how big?
|
Congrats James. Love when the clicker screams.......:yt:

Congrats on your first! It's amazing how much a good bite can wake you up. Any measurements?

I caught the YT on the trolled bait w/2oz egg sinker in 97 ft of water. The fish lost was on the yoyo. I fought it for about 2 minutes. It was a really strange strike though. Seemed as if it hit 2 or 3 times in a short distance before hooking up. I was about 75% reeled in in 90ft of water when I felt the first tug. |
Good job, thanks for the info.

What are most of your opinions on Yo Yoing year round? I know it's practiced more in the winter but is it as effective in some of the warmer months?

I know thats the status quo but there can't be a seasonal reason YT wouldn't bite a yo yo in the summer could there? Or is it more about a YTs location in the water column based on conditions (seasonal based conditions)? Don't they pull huge YT from the 'Nados on the deep iron in the summer? |
IMO anything can happen.
From my experience at LJ, spring/summer fish are in the upper 1/3 of the water column 70-100 feet of water on the dines and macks. It seems the flyline baits and surface iron catch more of the fish. Having said that, if you stuck to fishing deeper water 120+ with heavier iron you may find bigger fish, or a WSB. But it's hard to stick to that strategy when clickers are screaming and rods are bent inside of you. :shot: |
I was just about to say it, too... "Let's ask Pat!?" :D
|
nice :yt: ! you da man!

Congrats!! Nice 1st YT:yt:!!:luxhello:
