Which Avet Reel

Im a part time fisherman with beginner knowledge of what im doing. I'm looking for an all purpose reel that can be used in LJ on a kayak, in the bay for halibut and off shore for tuna/YT. I have heard great things about avetsband they can be found at descent prices.

Which Avet is best for the job and what is a good spectra to mono ratio that can handle most of the noted fishing scenarios. I like to throw iron as well and currenty use the Torium 20.

Thanks and I look forward to your replies!

How necesary is the MC mag cast?

JX or for even more, JX Raptor. You can grow into those reels, can handle anything you throw at them on a kayak from Marlin on down. Thread it with 80lb or 65lb Spectra.
If I had to do it again I would skip the SX's or MX's, go straight to the JX class.
Save some money buy blemished, just as good.
From Bill, an official Avet dealer in the factory blemished reels.
Email is billdevito@comcast.net
His listings are common on Ebay. But save even more by emailing him directly, avoiding Ebay fees. Pay thru paypal, he will send you an official invoice thru paypal.
I bought recently an EX 30/2 and a JX Raptor. Total cost $730, saved a little in shipping buying 2 at the same time, otherwise each cost $360 and $380 respectively.
These reels are fully warranted by Avet for one year just like the new reels. If you don't mind mismatched colors or a slight scratch, then these reels are operationally just as good as new.

get a avet sx or sxj for your light duty stuff and and a mxj, without mc cast for your bigger gamefish...just learn how to cast and you won't need it.

I would go with mxj fill that baby up to the top with 65lb braids. What kind of line do you have on your torum 20? You can use that to on the kayak

Thanks for all the advice guys... I have seen the ebay listings for the blemish reels. Ill definatley contact directly for savings if i go that route. Is charkbait legit? Their prices are real good too.

I get out for tuna 2-3 times a year on a friends boat. I fish more local than anything. Cant really afford two avet setups. I already have the torium setup, this avet would just provide me a second set up. I'd like it to be versitle and an upgrade over the torium in quality and versatility.

Thanks again, I dig all if the insight.

I wouldn't say it's an upgrade just different application. Charkbait is legit they have a storefront in OC. I have been there once on my way back from sunset oex. Great people with lots of goodies

I have an mxj raptor and love it. Also have a jx raptor and jx 6/3 and love them both. For the yak though, I prefer the mxj. And yes, charkbait is the real deal, and they also have a storefront in San Diego.

i would go with the mxj or the mxl. i have a mxl, that i can consider selling to you if you want. it black, and got 25lb test mono on it. let me know if your interested. but i would deffinitally go with the MX series its the perfect size. my favorite avet reel is the sx its perfect for everything and i can use it on light action rods. everything from making bait to geting lingcods. its casts great too so its perfect for using irons.

Charkbait is very legit, bought my MXJ, Fathom 25N and Lexa from them. I also have a Torium and love that reel too

Thanks to everyone for all the advice

I'm rarley in O'side, but appreciate the offer... I'm probably going to make a purchase this weekend.

You already have your Torium 20, you fish offshore sometimes and you're looking for one Avet setup.
I vote for the JX6 with MC for the few extra bucks. I can't justify the extra cost for the 2-speed but if you can...go for it...certainly won't hurt you.

I have the JX6 mounted on an 8' Seeker...awesome on 15#-40# fish and although I haven't tested it in the following situation I would have confidence in it offshore on much larger species.

My lucky day! Turners Temecula Grand opening this morning HUGE AVET SALE! (forgot about it and a friend reminded me late last night) Picked up the AVET MXJ MC at a very good price. Tons of people there, but Turners got everyone in/out quickly. Arrived at 0530 ish with 70+ already ahead of me: Most were after the gun deals!

MarkT 08-02-2013 12:55 PM

Good call on the MXJ. JX is the same size as the Torium 20 so you don't need one that size. MXJ is a little narrower than the SX but larger in diameter. It's my favorite Avet.
