Launched near Shelter Island today hoping for Halibut. I've never actually caught any on the kayak (or ever actually). Got a few anchovies from the bait barge and drifted southeast of there for nothing. Paddled all the way back to Shelter Island against the wind and current for a "long time". Did a few drifts in front of the triangle and was lucky enough to hook up two of these little guys. This one might be a little short but its my first Hali and Im kinda excited about it.

good for you. are you hooked now?

If you are it's all about more and bigger. Thanks for sharing.

Way to go Jeff! You kicked the "skunk" off. Halibut are an addiction. Look for a PM.

congrats on the first hali, I wont lie I'm a bit jealous because I am in the same boat (that you are now out of), still have yet to catch one from the yak (or ever haha)

See if I can't change that tomorrow.

Good job on getting your first. There's many big ones there, just keep at it and you'll get one.

Well done on the halibut. Thats the deal with them, weeding through the shorts to find the big ones. It's difficult to stay focused some times but the next bite could be a trophy. Mike

Congratulations Dude!
Way to Go Man, I've never caught a halibut either...so I can imagine the stoke. Haven't really fished for them either...bottom, sand, close to structure. Gonna start though, it's time to wipe off the hali skunk! Had my fun with the bass for awhile now. WTG:luxhello:

Thanks for all the kind words.

Went put today with a buddy in his boat (felt odd to go so fast). Caught the biggest lizard fish I've ever seen in person. Also got another short Hali near the shallow area off the south tip of Shelter Island. So shallow we could see the bottom in the right light. We almost thought we could see a butt or ray sitting on the bottom near where I caught today's shorty.

Hali

I catch halibut all day in s.d bay when I use a dropper loop with a 2 oz torpedo sinker, a size 2 hook with an anchovies pinned on. Fish 30-50 ft depth. If you do this you will catch them I'm sure of it. 2 weeks ago I got 14 with 2 legals. Try it guys
