Whats a quality.....?
Hey all!
This is going to sound extremely broad BUT, Im looking for a reliable FF, something that does well on structure, holes, and accurate bottom readings without breaking the bank. It will be primarily used for LJ and P Loma. Also looking at the Penn FRC4000, good flat fish rig.... yay? nay? And what reel(s) is everyones preference for yo yoing YT at the kelp? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!! TIGHT LINES!!!!:cheers1: |

I'll bite on flatfish reel. I have a penn fierce and it has been a great reel for me. But I wouldn't recomend it for hali fishing. It depends on where you're fishing but I would recomend a small to mid sized conventional. In the bays I use a sealine 20 and several bigger bass style bait casters. Since I always fish halibut in free spool a spinner is a bit awkward. Maybe a liveliner spinner would work butI like to have my thumb in the spool.

My personal preference is my hotrodded narrowed senator with the tiburon frame and 4 to 1 stainless gears. But that's cuz I built it myself. Get the biggest screen you can. Squinting at your FF sucks ass. And learn to use it in MANUAL mode. You can get a $200 one and learn to use it right, and it will outperform a $1,000 one that you don't use right. Lowrance HDS 5 is awesome. As are the Garmin Products. |

Daiwa Seagate 35H has done well for me. 40lb JB White braid straight to the iron. |

For jigging in the kelp, to each his/her own. My preference right now would be the the Penn 4/0 narrow YT Special 'Tiburon' frame with 40# mono. Haven't yet tried my Trinidad 16N with straight 65# red Power Pro (hoping I can reel so fast that the fish won't see the PP). Any one done this yet? Also considering using my Beastmaster 12/30 (i.e. original TLD 30 2-speed) with 60# PP Hollow Ace with 60# flouro Seaguar top shot, Talica 20 II (two speed) w/40# Hollow Ace with a 10' top shot of 40# flouro Seaguar Leader (as soon as I can get out there with my new HOBIE. FFY. |
