I use gps for fishing and hunting,
for practice mark you way point athome and use it around town before going dead now where in the water. Learn how to mark waypoints

GPS + Fog = you getting lost. I always carry a lensatic compass and know my bearing on launch. Learn to use a Military square and you will never be lost again.

Try initializing your unit with your known coordinates first. It may think you're on the other coast where the sun rises over the sea!:captain:
