time to head offshore.... tuna...

I am an avid kayaker, yet right now.... yes, right now, if you have the desire, get on an overnight boat. Everyone on our boat (went from Seaforth on the Cortez) on Tuesday and since have gotten limits of Yellowfin. Just a couple rods and #2/0 hooks is all you need.

It is really on fire right now. It is like a lake and the fish are bitin'.

Now I am on a Yellowfin smokin' run. Still prefer the Yellowtail, but hey, sushi time again, and instead of Yellowfin chunks, I will also do many strips of teriyaki yellowfin.

Anyway, time flies fast. I waited for weeks, and finally went, glad I did.

Oh yes, we caught many dorado, only 7 to 15 pounds or so, and the tuna are smallish, around 10 pounds, and the sea is FULL of tiny yellowtail, maybe 2 - 3 pounds, or even less. We let these ones go, of course. Let's hope many find their way to La Jolla and grow big.

And after all those tuna, I still prefer the kayak, where I get to be my own captain!

That's cool! So do you feel it's worth the money to go?

Yeah I have been looking at the numbers and it does look really fun.

It is hard to go on a boat with lots of others when you are used to solo kayak trips.

The last time I was on a party boat, I was thinking to myself how much more fun kayak fishing is.

No tuna around here tho for local yakers

Congrats on the tuna....

I love a good sushi story, and the smoked strips sound yummy, congrats on the epic tuna trip, thanks for the report, and feel free to "distribute the wealth"
I mean sushi....:D

Sounds great - trying to plan a trip Sunday on the Prowler...

Maybe I'll join ya... Let me check the bank account.

That nice ive been watching the counts and theyve been crazy good. People get limits of yft, yt, some dorado, som bft, albacore on occasion, some pig calicos. Im gonna head out on one soon can you tell me what lb test rods you were using?

Old Man in the Sea 10-04-2012 05:58 PM

light 20-30 floro unless wide open then you can go heavier...1/0 or 2/0 hook to match the bait size..

I went 3 weeks ago. Weather sucked that day. As the deckhands told me i went on the worst day of the whole year.... but other than the day i went the fishing is sick right now! Wish i could go again but the bank says otherwise.

Biggameaddict 10-04-2012 08:17 PM

thanks bro i spooled up 300 yards of 50# spectra and 5 yards of 30# floro. i hope my trip goes good.

I made it out last week on the Dolphin III out of Point Loma. Same basic set up, couple rods, 30lb line and 3/o hooks, but the dines were a nice size. As was said, wide open Yellowfin! As for smallish, in the 10lb range, I have something to say about that ...;)

Went out last week on the Pacific Queen and used one 30 and one 40lb set up with Mustad 2/0 hooks. And I killed it with limits of BFT,YFT averaging 30lbs and YT.

True that, crazy good offshore...
Finally we get a good offshore season :luxhello:

fishingfiend 10-07-2012 09:50 AM

My freezer is full of BFT/YFT/MAHI, get out there while they're still around. We also got into the 50# BFT, good times!

seaquinn 10-07-2012 09:54 AM

yep, the counts are still incredible. I want to go again, but my freezers are full as can be. Today it is a lobster for breakfast and WSB for dinner. And smoking yellowtail and tuna strips in between. Man, life is good.

Just trying to figure how to fit in an El Cajon (real) Oktoberfest meal in the early afternoon, with the pork legs..... and real German Beer...

all followed by a Charger victory! Gotta luv So. Cal fishing and life right now!
