Newbie kayak fishing in La Jolla, need expert help
im fairly new to kayak fishing. Been going out on canyon lake and Perris bass fishing, doing pretty good. I have been wanting to go to the la jolla kelp beds. I have a Perception Pescador Angler 12 foot (the old Tarpon 120). Was wondering if this would hold up out there? I am planning on just throwing Big hammers, flukes and dropper looped squid chunks. Just rigged my yak with a FF too that works well so im pretty stoked. Was wondering if the snorkel/dive area by the caves is launchable? Or do I have to go from the surf? I have surf launched once in a tandem kayak but we had a guide pull us.
thanks in advance! |
Launch at La Jolla Shores. It's fairly easy to launch, but I guess that's all relative to the person launching. Drive down Avenida La Playa until you are on the beach.

Don't forget to study the mlpa closures as well.

also, what would be the most productive way of catching fish out right over the kelp beds? Im pretty new to saltwater, I usually stick to fresh water bassing or surf fishing at the beaches |
I believe those are old boundries still, closure runs about 100yds. out pass that.

the kelp beds extend out EVERYWHERE. its insane. i will be out there saturday morning for some more YT. i can show you the spot where i was accidentally hooking up on some nice calicos while fishing for bait. there is so much kelp out there that looks so beautiful and tons of big checker bass. the bass that i caught were hitting these 3" skinny bear dropshot jigs about 2ft below the surface so i'm sure the shimano waxwing or a fast retrieved Big hammer lure would work.
i also am pretty sure that any of your freshwater bass techniques will work well in the salt. i've seen guys use creatures and senkos with great sucess in long beach, and i know LJ has bigger bass that bite more readily than LB bass. i'll be in a yellow ocean kayak scrambler. launching probably 7am. i could help you with the launch (a fast push does amazing things compared to a self launch.) |
